Scrapper Blackwell was one of the most important guitar players of the 1920s and early '30s, with a clean, dazzlingly articulate style that anticipated the kind of prominent solo work that would emerge in Chicago as electric blues in the 1940s and 1950s, in the persons of Robert Nighthawk and the young Muddy Waters.

The young bootlegger-turned-guitarist was, with Carr, responsible for redefining the blues sound in the 1920s and '30s by moving it out of the country and into the city.
Blackwell's relationship with Carr came to an end when the pianist died of alcohol poisoning in 1935.
It was not until 1958, just four years before his own death, that Blackwell picked up the guitar and recorded again.

"Scrapper" Blackwell was born in South Carolina in 1903 and he claimed to be of Cherokee descent, a claim that his appearance tended to support.
Blackwell was a successful illicit liquor producer in the 1920's whilst he played guitar at dances and rent parties around Indiananapolis to supplement his income.
Blackwell was very depressed by the death of his partner and friend and he first quit recording and then gave up music altogether, becoming a manual labourer in Indianapolis.

Scrapper Blackwell was an exceptional guitar player developing a style based around sophisticated single string-soloing, a sound that pointed the way for the guitar heroics that became a big part of most electric blues in the '40s and '50s.
Fortunately Blackwell was still in great form and subsequently cut an album on the British only 77 label in 1960 and later for the Prestige/Bluesville label in 1962 (unfortunately this is not available on CD).

In fact, as good as Blackwell definitely is, I found that it is the piano playing of Carr that holds much of the CD together.
His playing underscores Blackwell's guitar by providing a very solid bass rhythm that provides the fundamental basis for the toe-tapping style behind many of the tracks.
