Scream 2 (1997 released in 1998 in the UK) is the second part of the Scream trilogy, which was concluded by Scream 3.
A signature device, started in Scream and continued in Scream 2 and Scream 3, was the typical "rules" for that type of horror movie being stated by the characters.

 scream 2
Scream, as I noted in my review of it last year, was a clever and effective satire of the then-moribund slasher subgenre.
Scream 2 isn't quite as witty as I'd hoped -- it should've had more fun with the idea of sequels -- but it's twistier, gorier, and, at times, more shocking.
Scream 2 is as clever and nerve-wracking as the original; on its own self-referential, crowd-pleasing terms, it's a success.

Scream (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scream is a 1996 horror/dark comedy film directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson.
The film revitalized the slasher film genre in the mid 1990s by using a standard concept (teens being brutally killed off being one example) with a tongue-in-cheek approach that successfully combined straightforward scares with dialogue that satirized slasher film conventions, (for example, the final girl).
Also, the victims in Scream are quite self-aware: they each make clear their familiarity with, and poke fun at, teen slasher and horror flicks, which sets up their fairly ironic responses to the film's situations.

 DVDFILE.COM: Scream 2 review
The performances are all dead-on, but whereas the first film cruised along nicely and almost felt breezy, Scream 2 seems a bit clunkier and forced, especially the overtly dramatic situations and bloated, 2-hour plus runtime.
Scream 2 definitely delivers some truly scary moments, is ten times better than most crappy horror sequels, and is just plain a lot of fun.
Scream 2's track, though, is interesting because of the very fast and pressure-filled production schedule, so the behind-the-scenes antecedents are particularly interesting on this one.

 Scream 2 . Tucson Weekly . 12-22-97
Scream 2 is full of stilted dialogue and embarrassing romantic situations (between people who just look wrong together), and every 20 minutes, a character gets separated from the fold and perforated until dead.
Scream 2 also playfully references its own predecessor: The opening scene occurs in a movie theater showing a film called Stab (actually, the original Scream).
In Scream 2, the killer is omnipotent as long as he wears a mask and remains a monster.

Mutant Reviewers from Hell do "Scream 2"
In Scream 2, there's a scene involving a cop car that had me gripping my chair and the person next to me because the tension and anticipation were killing me. This movie is a must-see and as far as sequels go, this is the best I've seen.
Scream 2 pounds into us that sequels suck and are never as good as the original, so I guess they were simply making a point when they purposely made this sequel suck.
In the first Scream, the horror affected everyone and you could tell, the town was emptying out and kids were frightened, and everything that happened with the characters and around them was a natural extension of the killings going on.

 All-Reviews.com Movie/Video Review: Scream 2
Scream 2 is an even more satiric film than its predecessor, and this tone is established quickly with the opening scene.
As smart and fun as Scream was, it certainly had its share of cheesy aspects, and it is refreshing--not to mention surprising and brave--to see Williamson and Craven poke fun at their original film to such mercilessly hilarious effect.
I would not be surprised if in Scream 3 (which is all but a foregone conclusion at this point), we hear the fresh, funny, and frightening Scream 2 mentioned as proof in the positive.

Scream worked well enough within its own frames of reference as a parody of slashers with a knowing wink to the postmodern audience.
Scream 2 is closer in spirit to Wes Craven's New Nightmare (though still not as genuinely disturbing), operating outside the frames of reference even of the film itself, this time to embrace its own predecessor and engage in a less than subtle debate about the representation of violence.
Scream 2 is Scream apotheosized, and the latter is as integral to the former as The Godfather was to The Godfather Part II (agreed by the film students in the movie to be the greatest sequel ever made...).

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- SCREAM 2
SCREAM 2, ($30) like its predecessor is a cool and hip reinvention of the tired and "done to death" psycho-killer horror sub-genre.

With SCREAM 2, Courteney Cox proves that her first outing as Gale Weathers was no fluke- she really is an actress with a full emotional range who is wasted in sitcom roles.

 Eye Weekly - Scream 2 - 12.11.97
Scream 2, luckily for all of us, rules.
Just as Scream derived much of its postmodern bite from the gleeful way in which it dissected traditional horror-movie cliches, Scream 2 is all about how to make sequels that don't suck, allowing the characters full rein to riff on the potential pitfalls of franchising.
Well, Scream 2 delivers all this and more, holding its own admirably without deviating from the template -- and never, never retroactively violating the integrity of the original.

Scream was at least an interesting film with a sort of twist on the very much-maligned slasher film genre, although a lot of the script had a somewhat hackneyed and sophomoric feel to it.
Scream 2, on the other hand, contains a very hackneyed and sophomoric lot of expansive dialogue about the rules of making a sequel to a slasher movie written by none other than Wes Craven, who then forgets to follow his own rules.
