He was more interested in rhythm and blues music--Stax records releases and Aretha Franklin, especially--until he heard a recording by Julius Hemphill.
He recorded two albums for Columbia Records, which generated some discussion and controversy, due in part to the fact that Berne's music had little in common with the neo-tradionalist hard bop performers prominent in the mid-1980s.
Beyond his recordings as a bandleader, Berne has recorded with Bill Frisell, John Zorn, and as a member of the cooperative trio Miniature (group).

It is not surprising to me that a creative musician, in this case Tim Berne, has created a creative label, Screwgun (www.screwgunrecords.com).
When he decided to sell it to Japan without really discussing it with anyone, I felt a little bit betrayed and also it brought home again that point that if it is not your company, eventually it is going to end like that.
There is like three record companies and there is little scraps that other people fight over.

Screwgun Records is a product of the fertile imagination of composer, alto and baritone saxophonist Tim Berne.
Screwgun's initial release, issued in December 1996, was Unwound, a three CD set recorded live in Berlin (CDs 1 & 2, complete set) & Ann Arbor MI (CD 3).
It won Cadence's Record of the Year award for 1997.

Two years later, having recorded a couple of critically acclaimed, non-commercial albums, Berne was excused from his contract.
As of this writing, the Screwgun Records catalogue includes some thirteen titlesunder Bernes leadership as well as that of Ducret, Formanek, and keyboardist Django Bates.
This recording was made possible with grants from the Francis Goelet Charitable Lead Trust and the New York State Council on the Arts.

In the first scenario a record label wants to release the material and the artist either acquiesces or has a contract that essentially says they have no choice in the matter.
In addition, Berne is a veteran of the label wars, switching from his own homegrown label to working through a major company with bigger distribution and larger cash advances, only to find out that while the cash may be greener at first, the ink is redder in the end.
With that in mind the 44 -year-old Berne, has gone back to the DIY way of doing things, starting up yet another record label &endash; Screwgun &endash; to release music by his various ensembles and other like-minded musicians.

Berne collaborated on Zorn's Spy vs. Spy, one of the most violent records of 80s jazz: two alto sax players destroying the compositions of Ornette Coleman by flaying them with skronky solos and pummeling drums.
After starting his own label, Screwgun Records, Berne released several albums by Bloodcount and by his trio Paraphrase, an unusually taut and rhythmic free improv combo.
And it's no surprise that for all the colors and nuances of Berne's and conductor Ture Larsen's arrangements, this band is primarily an instrument of force.

Given that the original records sound pretty damn great to my ears, this must really be something.
Then there are the four Painkiller records (_Guts of a Virgin_, _Buried Secrets_, _Execution Ground_, _Rituals_), which are of course collaborations with Mick Harris.
