Scribus doesn't do it all by any means, and what it does it doesn't always do the way I'd like.
I think the Scribus team has done an incredible job in bringing this app from nothing to a very robust tool in just a few years, and they are also extremely helpful, supportive, and responsive.
I doubt Scribus could support Apple Events at this point, because it doesn't build natively on OS X. It's a Qt application, so it should build, but there are a lot of X11 dependencies in the code (I've tried and tried to get it to build).

Scribus is the Desk top publishing equivilent of Quark Express for Linux.
There were problems early on with getting fonts set up correctly in linux so that Scribus would work well, but that seems to have been ironed out with the later version.
Scribus outputs the end result to PDF, a format that any decent printers should be happy with.

We are hoping a lot of people can now switch to Linux using Scribus for their DTP work, or finally just achieve great results with a DTP program rather than trying to achieve these kind of results with a wordprocessor.
Scribus does very very well on that mark, in some cases more capable than commercial DTP apps.
However, I found Scribus to be really slow, especially when moving frames or doing other "basic" activities that involved the main canvas being redrawn.
