Scroll wheel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A scroll wheel is a hard plastic or rubbery disc on a computer mouse that is perpendicular to the mouse surface.
When using Microsoft Windows, holding down the control key and using the scroll wheel causes the text size to increase or decrease, or an image in an image-editing program to zoom in or out if such a feature is available in the editing program.
The scroll wheel first gained popularity in the late 1990s, and is notable in that it was one of the first additions to the basic two-button mouse design used for PCs that became a de-facto standard.

IPod - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Devices in the iPod family are designed around a central scroll wheel (except for the iPod shuffle) and provide a simple user interface.
All other operations such as scrolling through menu items and controlling the volume are handled by the scroll wheel in a rotational manner.
Notable changes include the touch sensitive wheel (replacing the mechanical scroll wheel), color displays with anti-aliased text, video capability and flash memory in place of hard disks.

The secret of iPod's scroll wheel | Perspectives | CNET News.com
The iPod's scroll wheel works via the same principle, which is one reason it's so effective at blasting through long song lists.
The original scroll wheel, designed by Apple, physically rotated and was not touch sensitive.
Apple considered the touch-sensitive scroll wheel an improvement over the original design but decided to migrate the playback control buttons from around the scroll wheel to above it, in a straight line.

I drag the mouse off-axis (to the left or right of the vertical scroll bar) and the amount by which the document is dragged per mouse move decreases.
Underneath the scroll bar could be tick marks that show what fraction of a screen you would be going though with a move of the mouse.
The scroll bar is always centered in the scroll track, and the rate of movement is determined by how far from center you pull the scroller.

Introducing the scroll wheel to web applications (Atomiq)
The scroll wheel is that nearly ubiquitous rolly thing near your index finger tip that makes the page scroll up and down.
There are some variations--the tilt wheel and click scroll wheel--but the basic up-and-down scroll wheel is the most common.
So maybe some scroll wheel conventions that are more nuanced than mere scroll bar manipulation will emerge.

Today while hitting command-tab a lot, I thought it’d be really cool to use my middle mouse button to trigger command-tab, then use the scroll wheel to select the application I wanted to switch to.
Scrolling the mouse wheel brings up the open applications overlay, just like command-tab would, but then it only very quickly switches to whatever app the scroll wheel has selected.
In order to really switch an app, you have to keep the wheel moving until you see where your app is and then you have to quickly select it.

In current CVS, when the curser is positioned over a window, using the scroll wheel acts as a left click on that window, and does not adjust the zoom.
It just feels strange that if my cursor is over a potion, and I scroll the wheel (not clicking it, mind you) then the potion gets drank (if the cursor is displaying the use icon).

Re: G5 Scroll Wheel Problem - Mice - Hardware - Logitech Forums
I have noted that the mouse scroll wheel fails to register a single scroll event on every 16th notch of the wheel.
Or just rotate the wheel half of a click around relative to the notched wheel, so that instead of registering a scroll in the middle of the notches and, if out-of-sync, middle of the area between notches, it registers halfway between the resting point and the middle of the notch.
I have tested to swap the scroll wheels between the two G5 mouses, and the behaviour follows the wheel, the mouse that has the wheel with a 24/45 slits ratio misses every 16th scroll event, the other does not.

The Evolution of Scrolling: Interesting Thing of the Day
Although the scroll wheel was invented by Mouse Systems (now owned by KYE) in the early ’90s, its popularity skyrocketed in 1996 when Microsoft made it part of their IntelliMouse®.
All of a sudden, scrolling was no longer cumbersome; without moving your hand from the mouse or even having any idea where your pointer was, you could scroll up or down with a flick of the finger.
The near-universal acceptance of the scroll wheel could have been the happy ending of the story, were it not for two niggling issues.
