Topic: Scrolling shooter

Scrolling shooter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scrolling shooters are a type of video game, a subgenre of shoot 'em up.
A scrolling shooter is, as the name suggests, a shoot 'em up that takes place against a scrolling background.
This sub-genre of scrolling shooter is sometimes known as a “bullet hell,” or a manic shoot-em-up.

Scrolling shooters, or scrolling shoot 'em ups, are a type of video game.
Xevious is a more typical scrolling shooter than Scramble, and introduced many concepts that are standard today, such as an episodic level structure, and bosses.
In almost all linearly-scrolling shooters, the single player is pitted against hundreds to thousands of normal enemies, and then against a boss at the end of each level.

From: Glendale, CA Which space shooter gae on the 2600 was the most complex in terms of movement, etc. I'm looking for a model for an idea I have, but nothing with duplicated, spaced ships like Space Invaders, something more along the lines of Asteroids but more of a scrolling shooter if possible.

Especially the horizontal scrolling section...playfield-wise, horizontal scrolling is infamously tougher on the atari than vertical, but it can be done, and then it's easier to "cluster" enemies in interesting ways, unlike River Raid which really only shoves one thing at a time at the player, despite its brilliance with the terrain.

It seems to me the shoot-the-screen type of shooter is the most popular flavor of the shooter these days in the late 90's.
One of the unique things of this horizontal scrolling shooter is that the scrolling is not forced; your sub's movement dictates scrolling, so you can just sit still if you desire.

All Game's Genre and Style Guide   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Shooters involve two primary activities on the part of the player: shoot enemies and avoid being shot.
Shooters in this style (made popular in the ‘80s and early ‘90s) have players controlling a character (human, alien, robot or other character) as they shoot various enemies from a 2D perspective (usually moving from left to right).
While the shooter may feature a top-down or overhead perspective, the fact that the screen only moves up or down is what makes it fall under this style.

Same goes with these shooters as every enemy ship has their own set pattern of firing.
