His second, Louisa Egerton, daughter of Scroop, first Duke of Bridgewater, had a dowry of £10,000 but this marriage was to prove the most lucrative to the family.
She was the favourite sister of the second Duke of Bridgewater who remained close to Earl Gower, despite Louisa’s death in 1761.
The latter carries as its inscription a kinder verdict: To the memory of George Granville Leveson Gower, K.G. 1st Duke of Sutherland.

John's eldest son, John Egerton (1646-1701), 3rd Earl of Bridgewater, was the ancestor of the Earls and Dukes of Bridgewater, thereby continuing the senior line of the family; he did not, however, inherit the Tatton estate which was instead left to John's third son, Thomas Egerton (1651-1685), in c.1677.
Their eldest son, William Tatton Egerton (1806-1883), inherited the estate and was subsequently raised to the peerage, being created Baron Egerton of Tatton in 1859; this title was passed on to his descendants until the death of the last Baron in 1958.

Lancashire Worthies - the Great Duke of Bridgewater
This unremembered Duke was succeeded in his turn by his younger brother, Francis, the third, the last, the famous Duke of Bridgewater, founder of British canal-navigation.
Further, the Duke of Bridgewater's land-agent and factotum, John Gilbert, was a brother of Lord Gower's steward, Thomas Gilbert, a practical man, and in his day and generation a useful one ; his name still survives in the Gilbert Unions, of which he was the founder.
It is from the graceful tribute to the Duke of Bridgewater by his grandnephew, of which we have so often availed ourselves, and it may form a fitting close to a sketch of his career.

Until the 18th century the only water here was Worsley Brook, then Scroop Egerton, 1st Duke of Bridgewater, became involved in a scheme to make Worsley Brook a navigable waterway to transport coal cheaply from local mines to Manchester.
This particular scheme failed but the scheme of his son, Francis, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, succeeded with the construction of the canal from Worsley, reaching Manchester in 1764 and Runcorn in 1776.
Sometime around 1851 Francis, 1st Earl of Ellesmere, who had inherited the Worsley estates, enhanced, enlarged and landscaped the area around the Old Warke Dam and built The Aviary as a hunting and fishing lodge.

scroop: The origin of the name "Scroop": Rebuttal
It's true that I started calling you "Scroop" after learning about Scroop Egerton, the 1st Duke of Bridgewater, but not because the gentleman was a man of no consequence...
Rather, Scroop Egerton, I would argue, is someone who is regularly overlooked in history books because his son, the 3rd Duke, is more famous for having constructed some of the great canals that transformed English transportation.
But the truth is that Scroop not only tried to build some canals that failed (thereby establishing a model for later generations to emulate then improve upon), he also - as this extract included below shows - proved himself to be a model citizen in and beyond his community.
