Scrophulariaceae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scrophulariaceae, the figwort family, is a family of plants.
In the past it was treated as comprising about 275 genera and over 5,000 species, but its circumscription has been radically altered since numerous molecular phylogenies have shown the traditional circumscription to be grossly polyphyletic.
Members of the Scrophulariaceae have a cosmopolitan distribution, with the majority found in temperate areas, including tropical mountains.

Scrophulariaceae, or Figwort, is often referred to as the Snapdragon Family.
Some of the species are semi-parasitic, especifically the Castilleja (paintbrush), which derive some of their nutrients by joining their roots to those of other plants.
Scrophulariaceae flowers have distinctly two-lipped corollas, with the upper lip divided into 2 lobes, and the lower into 3.

The first phase was a Scrophulariaceae Names List available on The Natural History Museum gopher server from 1993 to 96.
Though the coverage is basically restricted to this one family, the database includes information on variations in taxonomic delimitation, including alternative names for and subdivisions of the family (Personatae, Antirrhinaceae, Rhinanthaceae) and families included in the Scrophulariaceae in various current systems (Orobanchaceae, Selaginaceae, Globulariaceae).
The Scrophulariaceae information system originated in a number of separate databases generated in response to particular research and publishing projects.

Specimens to be placed into the synoptic collection originally were to consist of only plants in the state of Texas, however the scope of my project was later expanded to include other bordering states (Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and New Mexico) in order to make the collection more thorough.
The purpose of creating such a collection is to facilitate access to identification and comparison of plant specimens that researchers use in the PRC.
Any differences found were rectified by Dr. Wendt so that when the database is referenced in the future no discrepancies arise between names in the collection and names in the database.

Scrophulariaceae - Figwort or Snapdragon Family
There are about 2800 species 200 genera of Scrophulariaceae distributed worldwide; many grow in the American Northwest.
In the family Scrophulariaceae are some common hemiparasites, such as Indian paintbrush and owl's clover (Castilleja), lousewort (Pedicularis), and bird's beak (Cordylanthus).
These have green, photosynthetic leaves, but a substantial portion of the parasite's carbon is derived from the host plant, parasitized from the roots.

However, new phylogenetic research has indicated that Plantaginaceae s.s.
is nested within several genera previously included in Scrophulariaceae (but not including the type genus, Scrophularia).
Although Veronicaceae (1782) is the oldest family name for this group, Plantaginaceae (1789) is a conserved name under the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN) and thus has priority over any earlier family name within the circumscription of any group containing Plantaginaceae.

botanical.com - A Modern Herbal | Mullein, Great - Herb Profile and Information
The natural order Scrophulariaceae is an important family of plants comprising 200 genera and about 2,500 species, occurring mostly in temperate and sub-tropical regions, many of them producing flowers of great beauty, on which account they are frequently cultivated among favourite garden and greenhouse flowers.
A number of the Scrophulariaceae are or have been valued for their curative properties and are widely employed both in domestic and in regular medicine.
The Mulleins, like the Veronicas, are exceptions to the general character of the Scrophulariaceae, having nearly regular, open corollas, the segments being connected only towards the base, instead of having the more fantastic flowers of the Snapdragon and others.

 Tetranema (Scrophulariaceae) in Costa Rica
However, the combination of a caulescent, subshrubby growth habit and axillary, long-pedunculate, bracteolate, cymose inflorescences seemed incompatible with any known genus; indeed, we entertained the notion of establishing a new genus to accommodate this collection and other, similar material that has subsequently emerged from Costa Rica.
Our initial attempts to identify the Costa Rican material to the genus level were thwarted by our reliance on Standley and Williams's (1973) Flora of Guatemala Scrophulariaceae treatment.

The occurrence of bell-shaped corollas in most tribes of the Scrophulariaceae and in related families indicates that this is the basic (ancestral) flower form.

The implication is that the traditional family Scrophulariaceae comprises two distinct clades, involving numerous other small families; but the question needs pursuing in terms of a much larger sample of genera before practical implementation would be justifiable or feasible.
