In the Scrophulariales the ovary is composed mainly of two carpels with 2-many or even numerous ovules per carpel.
The circumscription and defintion of families in the Scrophulariales sensu Cronquist versus that of Takhtajan (1997) differs slightly.
Takhtajan moves both to his Scrophulariales while both Reveal and Thorne reduce Retziaceae to synonymy under Stilbaceae and assign the family to a position basal to the Scrophulariaceae.

Just three years ago, Scrophulariales were one of 64 orders comprised by the class Magnoliopsida.
Now the families of Scrophulariales have been subsumed as families of the order Lamiales (mints).

Abstract - rbcL in parasitic plants   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
To assess the changes to rbcL associated with the loss of functional constraints for photosynthesis, nucleotide sequences from nonparasitic and parasitic plants of Scrophulariales were used for phylogeny reconstruction and character analysis.
With the exception of Conopholis (Orobanchaceae), the rbcL locus is present in all parasitic plants of Scrophulariales examined.
Phylogenetic hypotheses based on rbcL gene are largely in agreement with those based on sequences of the nonphotosynthetic genes rps2 and matK and show a single origin of parasitism, and loss of photosynthesis and pseudogene formation have been independently derived several times in Scrophulariales.
