One of these islands, Round Island, is the last refuge for four species: Phelsuma guentheri, Leiolopisma telfairii, Bolyeria multocarinata and Casarea dussumieri, which together with four more species form a relict herpetofauna of great scientific and conservation interest.
Along with deciding to eradicate many of the introduced plants and mammals that have had negative effects on the islands, plans were resolved to begin a breeding program with the sole surviving tortoise of the Pinta race and several female tortoises from a nearby island.
Eggs gathered in plastic bags from laying females at Rancho Nuevo were packed in Padre Island sand in an attempt to imprint the turtles to Padre Island.

Cats were probably not common on the island until the 1930's when the establishment of the naval base on the island increased the human population and subsequently increased the cat population.
Current factors limiting the abundance and distribution of shrikes on the island appears to be, 1) predation of breeding adults and newly fledged young and 2) the paucity of suitable nest shrubs over the northern half of the island.

There is also a Florida scrub jay and a recently described Island scrub jay (on California's Santa Cruz Island), neither of which is doing nearly as well as the widespread western scrub jay.
Scrub jays are familiar in many rural and suburban areas of the western US, and especially in oak, pine, and chaparral areas in California.
They often become very tame and their rasping 'shreck-shreck-shreck' call is a characteristic West Coast sound.

 BirdForum - Western Scrub-jay correction
The "California jay" is incorrect (despite the scientific name, Aphelocoma californica) and could be confusing as there *is* a California endemic species called "Island Scrub-Jay" (Aphelocoma insularis) which is found only on Santa Cruz Island off the southern California coast.
Mostly in California you just hear Scrub Jay intending A. californica and excluding the insular Aphelocoma.
Additionally, no NA field guide I'm aware of uses or has used the "California jay" designation, and I've never heard a single birder here call it that.
