Scrum (rugby) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In rugby football, a scrummage or scrum is a way of restarting the game, either after an accidental infringement (a set scrum, in rugby union and rugby league), or when the ball has gone into touch (in rugby league only).
The early rules of rugby, even after recodification as "Laws of the Rugby Union" (the term "laws" having been borrowed from the Football Association), said the object of players in the scrummage was to kick the ball towards their opponents' goal line.
The scrum half from the team that did not infringe then throws the ball into the tunnel thus formed, and the hookers (and sometimes the props) compete for possession by trying to hook the ball backwards with their feet, while the entire pack tries to push the opposing pack backwards.

Rugby union - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rugby union is normally played by teams with 15 players, although there is also rugby sevens, a quicker game with 7 players a side.
The main differences from rugby league are the number of players per side (league has 13, union 15), the scoring system, and the means of securing and retaining possession of the ball (in union, both teams may contest possession at a tackle or set piece; in league one team retains possession for six tackles.
Rugby union is also related to rugby sevens, which the game's governing body the IRB also runs, as well as American football and Canadian football, which are directly descended from rugby football.

Another player (the scrum half) from the team that did not infringe then throws the ball into the tunnel thus formed, and the hookers (and sometimes the props) compete for possession by trying to hook the ball backwards with their feet, while the entire pack tries to push the opposing pack backwards.
A rugby league forward pack consists of six players: the loose-head prop, the tight-head prop, the hooker, the two second-row forwards, and the lock or loose-forward.
The ball is then rolled between the legs of the loose-head prop by his scrum-half directly to the back of the scrum: the scrum-half either then runs around and collects the ball himself, or the loose-forward detaches from the back of the scrum to collect the ball.

Rugby is played at a rapid pace, with few stoppages and frequent possession changes; therefore, ruggers have to be good, complete athletes.
In rugby, all passes must be behind the ball handler; however, the ball handler has the option to kick the ball forward if advantageous.
Scrums are the widely recognized play where a pack of eight men from each team push against each other to gain control of the ball.

 Rules of Rugby
Rugby balls are made in varying sizes (3, 4 or 5) for both youth and adult players.
Scrum: Rugby's unique formation, the forerunner of the American football line of scrimmage, is the method used to restart the game after the referee has whistled a minor law violation.
The non-offending team puts the ball into the tunnel by rolling it into the middle and each team pushes forward until one player is able to hook the ball with the feet and push it to the back row players of his/ her team.

A scrum is an important way to restart play during a rugby match.
The scrum half of the team in possession then rolls the ball between the two front rows of forwards, and each team tries to hook the ball backward with the feet.

Total Impact Method: A Variation on Engagement Technique in the Rugby Scrum
The optimal direction of force application in the rugby scrum may vary with the requirements of the specific situation but in simply applying force to the opposition, Rodano and Tosoni (1992) suggest there is some evidence that in both applying an impulsive force, and maintaining force application, that an angle of 120o is appropriate.
In the scrum situation, with the player in a spine horizontal position and hip, knee and ankle at an optimum angle, the reaction force will pass close to the knee, with a small moment arm (see fig 6) and in front of the hip with a considerably larger moment arm.
The implication for the player in the scrum is that while general maximal strength and rate of force development is an essential part of their preparation, special interest should be taken in the strength characteristics of the hamstring group to maximise the contribution of the bi-articular system.

In Rugby 2005, running is controlled with the left analog stick, while passing is controlled either by face buttons (on the Xbox controller) or triggers (on the PS2 controller).
Scrums and rucks are fairly automatic affairs, though you must manually "feed" a ruck by adding individual players to the pile.
In a scrum, you'll drop the ball into the pile and perform a hook to gain possession, all while pushing the analog stick in the direction you wish to drive the scrum.

 Assessment of Scrummaging Performance
Subjects that obtained better scrum force values relative to their explosive strength ('Good' group) tended to display technique similar to that recommended in the rugby literature (Greenwood, 1992; O'Shea, 1996), and was distinctively different from subjects that obtained relatively low scrum force values ('Poor' group).
Rugby researchers do not appear to take body mass into account when expressing performance in the vertical jump, even though there is the Lewis formula (Wilkinson and Moore, 1995) which calculates the power from the vertical jump from subjects jump height and body mass.
The highest relationship between Predator scrum force and the standard tests for leg power were obtained for sprinting when the time data was converted to average force.
