Rivers among these hills brought down great quantities of silt and mud which were deposited in the ocean depths in South Victoria.
East of the Scugog, I have not yet followed it up so carefully; but I have located it at several points as far east as Pigeon Lake, and have no doubt that it is practically continuous across the county.
The river reentered its present water channels about the Scugog Lake shore boundary of Mariposa Township, and then flowed south, to the east of Scugog Island, and out by Myrtle on the C.P.R. The modern Scugog Lake was then not in existence.

In the 1830's the government allowed the Scugog River to be damned in Lindsay to build Purdy's Mill and this resulted in the flooding of all the farms along the river.
At this point, the McGill farm only went to what is now the shores of Lake Scugog instead of where it would have extended to the middle of the lake.

The Salmonier River is located in Newfoundland, about a 3 hr drive east on the trans-canada highway from Gander International airport and about 1 hr drive west of the St. John's airport.
Another highly prized fish in the Salmonier River is the altantic salmon.
Fishing Action is best from the last week of June to mid July, with salmon predominately being caught anywhere in the lower reaches of the river.

The story of transportation over the waters of Lake Scugog began hundreds of years ago when the Huron, then the Iroquois and finally the Mississaugas made their way around the broad meandering river which was later expanded to become Lake Scugog.
The keel was laid in the spring of 1850 on the waterfront.
Excitement ran throughout the whole of Lake Scugog and the Scugog River all the way to Lindsay when it was announced that the Woodman was to have its maiden voyage on April 25, 1851.

We were even fortunate enough to meet up with a lock manager in the morning who shared some good information, opened the washrooms, and called ahead for us to get info on the water levels of the canals ahead.
The river twists and turns through some real nice properties and made for a relaxing cool down paddle as we came to a rest for the evening at the Bolsover Lift Lock.
This is a very high lock and in buggy conditions camping right at the edge of the hill is a good option - we found the draft from the water fall provided a good breeze to keep the bugs away.

The story behind the ghost, as I have heard from the locals is thus: On or about Hallowe'en, 1963, a teenage boy about 16 or 17 was riding home from his girlfriend' house one night through a farmer's field.
This in conjunction with the fact that there would be no living witnesses from that time period leaves the possibility of 'ghostlights' occurring on the island during the 19th century as speculative only.
He was able to confirm with her that no motorcycle accidents or otherwise that resulted in a fatality had occurred in the vicinity of Ghost Road during that time period.

The steady influx of European settlers along the northern shore of Lake Ontario resulted in the first of a series of treaties that seriously affected the woodland ways of the native.
The first treaty in this area was Treaty #20 signed on Nov. 5, 1818 at the mouth of the Ganaraska River at Port Hope by Crown official William Claus and several tribal chiefs.
The Indian River, on the north shore of the lake near its eastern end, enters through a wide, swampy estuary and was once used by the Natives travelling between Rice Lake and their hunting grounds further north.
