Scuola Grande di San Rocco - Venice, Italy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
The façade of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco is less noteworthy than the interior, which houses more than 50 paintings by Tintoretto, who spended around 24 years of his life to decorating the school.
The body of the patron saint was brought to Venice in 1485 and the Scuola di San Rocco acquired the title of Scuola Grande in 1489.
The interior of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco so much hit Ruskin that he described it with the Cappella Sistina in Rome and the Campo Santo in Pisa as "one of the three most precious buildings in Italy".

Entrance Ticket to the Scuola di San Rocco
When Ruskin first visited the Scuola, it was virtually in ruins, unlit, and not open to the general public.
Today, more than a century after the beginning of the museum movement, which made works of art available to the general public, the building is appreciated by the Venetian authorities -- as it clearly wasn't in Ruskin's time.
In the past few years, the Scuola has seen a wonderful restoration, which reveals the magnificent carved wooden walls, and Tintoretto's magnificent series of paintings are finally visible.

Upon return to France, he was not recognized by his family and died in prison at age 32, but he'd already planted a seed in Italy and a sect dedicated to San Rocco was recognized by the republic in 1478.
The cult of St. Rocco, invoked against the plagues that decimated Europe, was particularly strong in Venice, and after the grave epidemic of 1576, the saint was made co-patron of the city.
Apart from being a great example of Venetian Renaissance architecture, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco is famous for a series of more than 60 paintings by Tintoretto that some have referred to as Venice's Sistine Chapel.

Paintings in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
The Scuola Grande di San Rocco was founded in the late fifteenth century.
The Scuola's headquarter was not complete until the mid-sixteenth century, so when Tintoretto began working there in 1564 he found an essentially blank slate.
After winning the competition by sneaking into the officer's chamber (albergo) of the Scuola and installing his full-scale painting of a triumphant San Rocco on the ceiling, he covered the walls with tumultuous scenes of Christ's Passion.

The watercolor appears to be the canal side of San Rocco
I was recently in Venice, and there is a canal side to the Scuola di San Rocco, and it is quite possible to see exactly where JSS must have been to paint this watercolor.
All research suggests he was in a gondola at the time of the painting, but there are several windows in a building across the canal which would give the same vantage point.
