Scup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Scup or porgy, Stenotomus chrysops, is a fish which occurs primarily in the Atlantic from Massachusetts to South Carolina.
Scup grow as large as 18 inches (450 mm) and weigh 3 to 4 lb (2 kg), but they average 1/2 - 1 lb (0.5 kg).
In the Middle Atlantic Bight, scup spawn along the inner continental shelf.

Scup prefer temperatures greater than 45 degrees F and are most frequently encountered in water temperatures from 55 to 77 degrees F. In New England, water temperatures in early fall occasionally plunge below the scup's tolerance level, killing large numbers of fish.
Scup populations on the East Coast have displayed periodic cycles of abundance over the last twenty years, with any change in population density generally lasting for 2 to 4 years before being reversed.
The scup catch report is sent out with the renewal license application at the end of the year and is due as a requirement to renew the license for the next year.

Status of Fisheries Resources off Northeastern United States
Scup or porgy, Stenotomus chrysops, occur primarily in the Mid-Atlantic Bight from Cape Cod to Cape Hatteras.
In summer, scup are common in inshore waters from Massachusetts to Virginia, while in winter, scup are found in offshore waters between Hudson Canyon and Cape Hatteras at depths ranging from 70 to 180 m (38 to 98 fathoms).
Current indices of scup spawning stock biomass are near record lows (1998-2000 average = 0.10 kg/tow), at less than 5% of the threshold biomass index of 2.77 kg/tow, and hence the stock is considered to be overfished.

 Scup
Scup are inshore from early April at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, and from early May northward to southern Massachusetts.
Scup have, however, been taken during the past few winters in depths of 45 to 70 fathoms off southern New England, in numbers large enough to show that part of the northern contingent of the species simply moves offshore in autumn, to come inshore again in spring.
It appears that different bodies of scup move inshore successively in spring, for in 1950 the Albatross III took 2,700 scup in 15 hauls at 45 to 55 fathoms, in the Hudson Gorge, on May 11-18, which is one or two weeks after the earliest scup, ordinarily appear inshore near New York.

Applying the nominal average ex-vessel price of scup for the 1998-2002 Winter II period of $0.80/lb, and assuming the transfer of 2,203,751 lb (999,605 kg), the additional amount of scup available for harvest during the 2003 Winter II period would be valued at $1.763 million.
However, as it is possible that the average price for scup during Winter II may decrease, given the potential increase in scup landings, the estimate of the increase to ex-vessel gross revenues most likely represents an upper limit.

Trials show modified net reduces scup discard
One such species is scup, where high levels of discard in certain areas at certain times prompted the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in 2000 to impose gear restricted areas (GRAs) in an attempt to restrict small-mesh fisheries and therefore reduce discards.
The issue of scup discard and the imposition of GRA regulations prompted the Mid-Atlantic council to commission conservation engineering studies.
Even though the solution we outline may not be the full or perfect answer to the problem of scup discard in small-mesh fisheries, it is one step forward and, if nothing else, should provide the impetus for others to develop alternate strategies or modified gears.
