Scytale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In cryptography, a scytale (also transliterated as skytale, Greek σκυτάλη, a baton) is a tool used to perform a transposition cipher, consisting of a cylinder with a strip of leather wound around it on which is written a message.
The ancient Greeks, and the Spartans in particular, are said to have used this cipher to communicate during military campaigns.
Due to difficulties in reconciling the description of Plutarch with the earlier accounts, and circumstantial evidence such as the cryptographic weakness of the device, several authors have suggested that the scytale was used for conveying messages in plaintext, and that Plutarch's description is mythological.

Dune: Scytale   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
The original Scytale was a Face Dancer, who was born (or, perhaps, "grown") prior to the development of the Master caste.
Just what Scytale was at this point is a mystery: it depends upon whether Face Dancers were, at that point, a biologically engineered race (as they were during the "Heretics/Chapterhouse" era), or the products of delicate, but non-genetic, surgical techniques.
Fortunately, however, it doesn't matter - Scytale is reborn through an unknown number of ghola incarnations.

The Scytale is an optimistic design, advertised as being able to fight its way out of most forms of trouble.
In point of fact, its lack of armour and poor design make it unable to compete with much more than a scout/courier, and the gunners of most of the examples in current service spend most of their time as cargo shifters.
As a design, the Scytale proved a spectacular failure, and it is no longer made.
