  Arrakis - Dune
Dune Messiah is the sequel to Dune and more importantly a bridge to the next book.
The new life emerging on Arakis is seen as a threat by the old Fremen, and the fate of the entire planet is in danger as Alia deals with her personal demons and the ultimate fate of her brother.
Throughout the Dune novels, Frank Herbert frequently referred to the long-ago war in which the humans wrested their freedom from "thinking machines." Now, in Dune: The Butlerian Jihad, Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson bring to life the story of that war, a tale previously seen only in tantalizing hints and clues.

Bene Tleilax - Dune Wiki   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
By the events of Chapterhouse: Dune, the Bene Tleilax had been all but eradicated...save for one Master, Scytale, presumedly a ghola of the original Scytale of Dune Messiah (though the Scytale from Dune Messiah was a face dancer whereas the one in Chapterhouse: Dune was a Master) who was captured by the Bene Gesserit.
At the time of Dune, gholas have no access to the lives of the person from whom they were cloned, but after Dune Messiah, the Tleilaxu discover that a ghola can recover his or her genetic memory during a carefully staged moment of great stress.
In Heretics of Dune, it is revealed that the Tleilaxu can also create the spice melange in axolotl tanks, breaking the monopoly on spice that Arrakis held for thousands of years which strongly determined the economics and the politics of the Imperium.

Bene Gesserit - Dune Wiki   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
In the novel Dune, the Bene Gesserit breeding scheme was, in theory, to have come to full fruition from the union of an Atreides daughter (born of the Lady Jessica and the Duke Leto Atreides) and the Na-Baron Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (son of Abulurd Harkonnen, brother of the Siridar-Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.
It is hinted throughout Heretics of Dune that they are cautiously using democracy, but this is not confirmed and elaborated upon until the supreme Honored Matre confronts a captive Reverend Mother named Lucilla and attempts to pry Bene Gesserit secrets from her on the Guild planet of Junction.
In Children of Dune, Alia eventually succumbs to the ancestral ego of her grandfather, the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, who wants nothing more than the destruction of the Atreides, and is given another opportunity, from the inside, to realize it.

Scytale is a Tleilaxu Face Dancer, the principal of the conspirators in _Dune Messiah_.
That this Scytale is the same one (or, rather a ghola/clone of the one) from _Dune Messiah_ is indicated by Master Waff's musings that Scytale had once met Muad'Dib.

Scytale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ancient Greeks, and the Spartans in particular, are said to have used this cipher to communicate during military campaigns.
From indirect evidence, the scytale was first mentioned by the Greek poet Archilochus who lived in the 7th century BC.
Due to difficulties in reconciling the description of Plutarch with the earlier accounts, and circumstantial evidence such as the cryptographic weakness of the device, several authors have suggested that the scytale was used for conveying messages in plaintext, and that Plutarch's description is mythological.

The last two Dune novels are about the Bene Gesserit and how they deal with an invasion of the "Honored Matres," which is a perversion of their own secret society.
Another issue I have with the last two Dune novels is their treatment of the Tleilaxu in general and Scytale in particular.
Scytale, as a character, is introduced in Dune Messiah as a Face Dancer.

 Dune 7 Blog
Hunters of Dune and the concluding volume, Sandworms of Dune, bring together the great story lines and beloved characters in Frank Herbert's classic Dune universe, ranging from the time of the Butlerian Jihad to the original Dune series and beyond.
At the end of Chapterhouse: Dune -- Frank Herbert's final novel -- a ship carrying the ghola of Duncan Idaho, Sheeana (a young woman who can control sandworms), and a crew of various refugees escapes into the uncharted galaxy, fleeing from the monstrous Honored Matres, dark counterparts to the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood.
As designed by the creative genius of Frank Herbert, the primary story of Hunters and Sandworms is the exotic odyssey of Duncan's no-ship as it is forced to elude the diabolical traps set by the ferocious, unknown Enemy.

He seemed tacitly to admit this once when he said that "parts of Children of Dune were written before Dune was finished." It also suffers from the fact that it was first serialized in a SF magazine.
While Dune Messiah is the second part of the Dune trilogy, I think Frank Herbert really accomplished his goal of describing the failure of the future-seeing hero in this book.
Dune Messiah is exactly as I remembered it: a disappointment not just in comparison to Dune, but a true mediocrity in its own right, with a surprising amount of fragements of thoughts and ruminations that just don't make any sense.

Arrakis, or Dune as we know it, is merely a smoking cinder, one of many on which the Maters left nothing or nobody alive.
The first three books could be the Paul Atreides trilogy, in the middle there's God Emperor of Dune, and the final three could have been planned as the Golden Path trilogy, with Chapterhouse Dune as the middle one of that trilogy.
Just like in Heretics of Dune there are quite some story-threads, but this time the ending doesn't bring them together.

 Dune Messiah Summary
Reverent Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is not sure whether to accept Paul’s offer as her sisterhood also believes the Bene Tleilax to be evil, so she asks Paul for a conference to Wallach to ask her Mother Superior’s opinion on the offer.
Meanwhile, the Bene Tleilax profiting a period of confusion manage to get into Paul’s court two further tools: a Shape dancer, Scytale who enters in the Keep by pretending to be Otheym’s daughter, one of Paul’s old Fedaykin; and Bijaz a dwarf that served in Otheym’s house.
Having found their lever, the Bene Tleilax bargain with Paul the recovery of his beloved Chani in a ghola form, first through Bijaz who is killed by Duncan/Hyatt and latter by Otheym’s fake daughter who takes Paul’s newborn twins as hostages in order to be heard.

Movie Info for Children of Dune on MSN Movies
Officially based on two of Frank Herbert's science fiction novels, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, this three-part, six-hour miniseries was actually a sequel to the Sci-Fi Channel's multipart adaptation of the original Dune.
The story was set in the year 10,103: Having deposed the evil emperor of the desert planet Arrakis, the messianic Paul Atreides (Scott Newman) was firmly installed as the planet's supreme "Muad'Dib," as well as the guardian of Arrakis' life-enhancing spice supply.
Like the previous Dune miniseries, this one was decked out with superlative special effects, excellent performances, on-target direction, and (most vital for any Herbert adaptation) a thoroughly logical and coherent teleplay.
