SdKfz 231 (6-rad) heavy armoured car in a battle damaged village in Poland, September 1939.
The troop's theoretical establishment was seven SdKfz 251/5s, the assault pioneer version of the medium half-track, but whether these were available in sufficient numbers is doubtful, and suitably modified 250/1s would have taken their place.
The second vehicle is an SdKfz221 light armoured car, mounting a smaller turret than the 222.

The SdKfz222 is the standard workhorse of the German reconnaissance forces.
It was based on the earlier SdKfz221 chassis, which had it’s origins in the standard Horch heavy car.
The Sd Kfz 222 was fitted with a larger turret than the 221, fitting a 2cm KwK 30 automatic cannon initially, with later production switching to the 2cm KwK 38, which had a higher rate of fire.

Arranged by vehicle type number, coverage starts with the boxy Gepanzerter Kraftwagen which was all that was allowed after the Armistice which ended the Great War, then moves on to the very advanced designs tried in the late 1920s which were not produced as they were beyond the economic means of the day.
The more practical Kfz 13 based on a modified light car chassis and larger 6x4 SdKfz 231 truck-based series were to serve in the 1930s and early war years.
Each is described in the author's usual concise and authoritative style, giving details of their development, production and use along with full data tables.
SdKfz232 (8-Rad) production was stopped in 1943 with the appearance of the SdKfz 234 Puma.
The 232 were not withdrawn from service; many of the old vehicles were upgraded with new radio communication equipment, replacing the "bedstead" with more modern and compact wire antennae.
These vehicles are often referred to as SdKfz232 (Fu) (8-Rad) (Fu; Funkapparat; radio, Rad;wheel) It used 20 mm ammunition and had a muzzle velocity of 899 m/s, the 232 also carried 1 x 7.92 calibre MG."
