Welcome to the Tristan Jones Web Site
Built in England in 1960, the Dart had its share of adventures with early owners, but the trip that would bring the boat world-wide fame, began in 1973 when she was purchased by adventurer Tristan Jones.
With Jones at the helm, Sea Dart became the first boat to sail the Panama Canal (using hippies as the "sail"), the first vessel of its size to conquer the Humbolt Current and, most notably, the first ocean-going vessel to sail Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable water on Earth.
After Titicaca Jones drug, pushed, hauled, sailed, floated and wrestled Sea Dart down the River Paraguay and across South America in an epic challenge that tested the resolve of what had to be one of the most obstinate, determined men who ever lived.

Flown by Convair test pilot Charles Richbourg, the Sea Dart was only able to exceed the speed of sound while in a shallow dive and not while in level flight.

The Sea Dart was one of a handful of seaplane - fighter designs that appeared in the decade immediately following the end of the second World War, and was a contemporary of Britain's Saunders-ROE S.R.A.1 single-seat flying-boat.
But the Convair design was undoubtedly the most technologically advanced example of this type, incorporating as it did such innovative features as a delta wing and twin retractable hydro-skis in place of the more traditional boat hull and wing-mounted floats.
The twin-engine sea dart also proved itself to be nearly as fast as its land-based contemporaries, for it was the first seaplane to exceed the speed of sound.
