Sea Dart missile - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sea Dart began as Hawker Siddeley project CF.299, a weapon to replace the Royal Navy's first generation long-range surface-to-air missile, the Sea Slug.
The missile system was also fitted to Invincible class aircraft carrier but was removed during refits in the 1998-2000 period to increase the area of the flight deck and below-decks stowage associated with the operation of RAF Harrier GR9 aircraft.
Sea Dart was used during the Falklands War and is credited with 8 confirmed kills.

Sea Dart was used during the Falklands War and is credited with 8 confirmed kills, including a high-flying ''Canberra'' reconnaissance aircraft outside the official engagement envelope and low-flying attack aircraft.
These shortcomings were more damning of the Type 42 destroyer than Sea Dart itself, as the latter were fitted with obsolete 1950s-era radar Type 965 and had no other defence against aircraft apart from a pair of World War 2-vintage 20mm guns.

In that instance, the missile scored no hit and the vessel itself was damaged by a bomb released by the attacking aircraft.10 The only other use of the missile was in a surface to surface role where it was used to attack an Argentine position near Stanley.
The Sea Dart missile itself introduces further delays since it requires a two minute warm-up period on the launcher while its gyros line up.16 Unfortunately, it is not feasible to keep a warmed-up missile on the launcher indefinitely, especially in the cold weather.
Generally, it is their objective to destroy attacking aircraft (and their missiles, if any) at as far from the task force as possible since destroying the aircraft before it launches an anti ships missile not only destroys the missile for that mission but, prevents the aircraft from returning for a subsequent attack.

The last layer of detection is provided by Sea King helicopter early warning aircraft, which normally operate not far from the centre of the fleet with a detection capability of about 40 nautical miles.
The sombre reality is that, after the withdrawal of the Sea Harrier, the "last ditch" layer of air detection and defence, the early warning helicopter and weapons systems, would be easily saturated and overcome by enemy aircraft delivering air-to-surface missiles, Smart weapons and even iron bombs.

 Invincible Class Aircraft Carrier
There was still a requirement to fly anti-submarine helicopters though, and for a new class of ship to act as the command and control centre for a task force.
As the Government of the day was not prepared to finance such a class of vessel as an aircraft carrier, the Navy came up with a number of euphemisms to hide the true nature of these vessels, such as calling them Through Deck Command Cruisers, and side elevation sketches showing a conventional profile.
While the first of class was under construction changes were announced, which included the ordering of twenty-four Sea Harriers, to carry out the interceptor role, and would be equipped with the Ferranti Blue Fox monopulse radar, an integrated nav/attack system, provision for air-to-air missiles and a heads-up display.
