  Oregon Sea Grant - What is Sea Grant?
Fanning out from the central campus of Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon Sea Grant faculty and staff work the length of the coast and along the Columbia River, from county offices of the OSU Extension Service, at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, and at the OSU Seafood Lab in Astoria.
Sea Grant also manages the HMSC Visitor Center, and its marine education programs, as part of a broader marine education focus that includes graduate and undergraduate fellowships, an Aquarium Science associate degree program, and a new Free-Choice Learning Initiative that seeks to learn more about how people learn outside the classroom.
Through its parent agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Oregon Sea Grant is part of a nationwide network of Sea Grant programs with whom we often collaborate on projects of regional and national importance.

Sea Grant has funded a mini-grant research project that will attempt to determine the extent to which drownings along the Texas coast have occurred in conjunction with the presence of rip currents.
Under the grant, seven alterations to the end of the jetties were tested using numerical models, and those modifications made no significant change, according to the models, in the concentrations of suspended sediment near the beaches.

The term "Sea Grant" was chosen to emphasize the parallel between the present needs of the Nation in the marine environment and the need for development of the land at the time of the Morrill Act of 1862, which established the Land Grant Program.
Like Land Grant before it, Sea Grant provides the means through which scholars and institutions of higher education can apply their knowledge and talents to the practical needs of the Nation and the world.
Sea Grants are not usually made directly to industry, but a participating industry may be compensated with Federal Sea Grant funds by a University Sea Grantee for goods or services provided as an integral part of a cooperative arrangement.

The new piece of legislation introduced by U.S. Representative Justin Smith Morrill of Vermont granted to each state 30,000 acres of public land for each Senator and Representative under apportionment based on the 1860 census.
