Sea Harrier Operational Flying Training (SHOFTU) was formed as part of INAS 300 on 16 April 1990.
Earlier Sea Harriers had previously been taken to the U.K. for overhaul after they were acquired in the mid-1980s.
It was planed that the Sea Harriers would retire by 2010 along with the decommissioning of aircraft carrier INS Viraat in the same year.

The Harrier continues to serve today as the Harrier GR.Mk 7 and GR.Mk 9 and AV-8B which are built by BAE Systems and Boeing.

A total of twenty Sea Harriers were deployed from HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible, and they inflicted serious losses on the Argentine air force destroying 23 aircraft in air-to-air combat.

Sea Harriers, which are intended largely for air defence, were also employed in the ground attack and reconnaissance roles: the Harrier GR3s, primarily ground attack aircraft, were converted within a week to use Sidewinder AIM 9L air-to-air missiles in the air defence role.

The range uses towers in the North Sea to track individual aircraft – each has a tracking pod fitted to its wings – feeding reams of information back to Waddington, where computer wizardry turns it into a 3-D picture of the aerial battle.
The ‘simulation’ comes into its own when pilots land and are debriefed – each flier can see and hear a real-time playback of the mission he or she has just flown in one of two dedicated theatres.
Flying against the more capable F16s and Mirage 2000s, the Sea Harriers used their Blue Vixen radar and AMRAAM air-to-air missiles to deal with their agile opponents at long range, the Belgian and French pilots in turn used supersonic speeds and 9G manoeuvres in a bid to get the upper hand.

The Sea Harrier FA2, introduced in 1993, is highly regarded by the United States Air Force as the "small aircraft with the big radar" and regularly beats the RAF's frontline fighter, the Tornado F3, in mock "dog fights".
The RAF Harriers do not have the Sea Harriers' radar or missile system and have a very limited air defence capability using Sidewinder missiles, which can be used only at short range and in daylight.

The BAE Systems FA2 Sea Harrier fighter aircraft, which is in service with the British Royal Navy and the Indian Navy, provides air defence for the carrier fleet, particularly against low-flying attack aircraft armed with long-range air-to-surface missiles.
