EQUIPPED TO SURVIVE (tm) - Aviation Life Raft Reviews - Sea Anchors / Drogues - What a Drag
To function properly, the anchor must be strong enough to not be torn off in heavy seas, provide sufficient drag, offer adequate line length to cope with typical sea conditions, not tangle in the lines, not collapse when subjected to repeating wave action and ideally it should be easily adjusted for length.
The sea anchor was attached along with all the mooring lines and the inflation cylinder next to the secondary entry point and it got seriously tangled with the lines and did not deploy properly.
BFG is using the same flat round parachute style sea anchor made of light parachute (as in jumping out of a plane) material as on previous rafts, 36 inches in diameter (flat) with 8 thin shrouds.

Parachute Sea Anchors, Drogues, Sea anchors - What's the difference
In simple terms a 9ft diameter or larger parachute sea anchor is required to hold a bow head to wind, whereas a 3ft diameter (drogue) simply does not have the power and would allow the yacht to fall backwards or be thrown by a wave.
The parachute sea anchor complements the Para-Drogue and vice versa.
When the parachute sea anchor is required, shackle all lines to the appropriate parts and deploy the retrieval floats over the windward side followed by the Para-Anchor in its self-deploying bag.

 Kayak Sea Anchors
Sea Anchors are used by vessels in heavy seas and strong winds to keep the bow positioned into the oncoming breaking seas.
A sea anchor is essentially a piece of cloth with lines attached that lead to the bow of the boat.
As the boat is blown backwards by the wind and pushed backward by the sea and shoved back by the breaking waves, the sea anchor keeps the bow pointed into the wind and waves by creating resistence as it is pulled through the water.

Sea Anchor Comparison by Sail Magazine
But in strong winds with heavy seas, the bow of most boats is forced off by the backed staysail, and the boat usually ends up slowly sailing along the trough of the waves.
Although retrieving the sea anchor took longer without the trip line, it was still not too difficult.
There was no fussing with backstaysails, drogues, or sea anchors; they just dropped the jib and sheeted in the mainsail and relaxed.

PARA -TECH SEA ANCHOR   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Sea anchors are designed to be streamed from the bow of a boat, so that the bow is held directly into the wind and waves.
Since the bow presents a surface with lower drag, strain on the vessel and rode is reduced. The sea anchor's incredible drag practically stops the vessel, and allows her crew to passively wait out heavy weather. This technique has been used on monohulls, multi hulls, commercial fishing boats, and many pleasure power boats with remarkable success.
Parachute sea anchors can also be used in less violent conditions when the captain simply wants to stop his/her vessel offshore.

Liardet (1849): A sea anchor.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The reason I propose a triangular form in preference to the square is, that the trough of the sea may strike as lightly as possible, should the upper angles at any time approach the trough of the sea while riding at anchor.
If a ship should approach the shore with this sea anchor down, it would enable her to bring-to with her proper anchors much easier than if the sea anchor had not been down.
She might let go her proper anchors and veer from the sea anchor, until she had sufficient cable out, which would give her a much better chance of holding.

 Anchors away with Herod
Hadas says the anchor he uncovered in the Dead Sea differs in at least one important respect from several other anchors from the same period uncovered in the Mediterranean Sea: the chemical composition of the Mediterranean's water led to the decomposition and disintegration of the anchor's organic materials, that is, its wood and ropes.
The Dead Sea anchor, however, underwent a reverse process: the minerals led to the melting of the lead, but adequately preserved the wood and ropes.
It is a simple anchor made of wood, and it is estimated to date back to between the eighth and fifth century BCE.

It was tough going into such large seas so we decided to heave to and take a break from the difficult conditions -- for in addition to the wind and seas we had fog that had been with us for a couple days now.
Ideally we should have waited on anchor until the seas subsided and retrieved it in the normal manner, but we were anxious to get in to shore before nightfall and the weather reports didn’t offer any hope that the conditions would improve.
Due to the tremendous force on the line and chain as you deploy the sea anchor, utmost caution must be used to avoid getting a finger, hand or any other body part or clothing caught in it.

The Para-Tech anchor was good for roughly 10,000 pounds of load, and then would start to blow panels, which in turn would relieve the load on the rode.
For fin keel sailing yachts the drogue/sea anchor should be deployed from the stern, not the bow.
We have nothing against parachute anchors per se, and in moderate conditions, where seas are not breaking dangerously, properly deployed, they can do a good job of holding you in position.

After much discussion we decided that the sea anchor was too small and not enough line out (about 100foot), Can not remember how much we added but possibly doubled the length out, lay to it for over a day until we could start sailing again, we made it into port under sail.
Comparing the two experiences I would rather lay to a sea anchor than run with a drogue now, with the sea anchor out the strongest part of the vessel was pointed in the "best" direction, also with aft opening hatches being protected.

 Sea Anchor Rigging Information
The anchor stabilizer rotates and tilts as environmental forces penetrate the canopy and produce potentially damaging energy that is transmitted through the shroud lines to the Para-Ring.
The Benefit: When attached to the anchor rode, the pendant line can be connected to a stern winch to form a bridle, which is then used to hold a vessel in a heave to position during heavy seas.
Wrapped around the anchor rode or pendant line, this chafe protection reduces wear caused when the line rubs against the vessel and her rigging.

Once set, the anchor tends to break out and reset when the direction of force changes dramatically, such as with the changing tide, and on some occasions it might not reset but insead drag.
The holding power of this anchor is at best about twice its weight unless it becomes buried, when it can be as much as ten times its weight[2].
