Seawall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seawalls and retaining walls (bulkheads) are included in the single generic classification of walls.
A seawall is a form of hard coastal defense constructed on the inland part of a coast to reduce the effects of strong waves and to defend the coast around a town or harbour from erosion.
The term is typically used to describe walls built on the land parallel to the coast, but may also apply to breakwaters and groynes which are built in the water.

The Hampton Beach sea wall construction is completed and all that is left are the finishing touches now, according to state project engineer Pete Blaisdell.
The heavy equipment for wall building was all off from the final stretch of construction area by the end of last week, and by mid to late July, workers will be out of the area completely.
Wall completed, the number of workers will diminish to about ten and some of the extra money will be used just to make it "look nice".

 Spectrum Spring 1998
Sea walls are a potent symbol of the struggle between man and nature.
Although sea walls are designed to prevent beach erosion, many experts claim they have detrimental side effects, sometimes causing more erosion than they prevent.
"One was protected with a sea wall, and the other one was just a sandy dune." The researchers generated short, storm-type waves straight on to the beach and found that the waves dug into the sand in front of the sea wall and the dune to the same extent.

NASA GISS: Science Briefs: Sea Level Rise   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Sea level could rise 40 to 65 cm by the year 2100, due to predicted greenhouse-gas-induced climate warming.
Such a sea level rise would threaten coastal cities, ports, and wetlands with more frequent flooding, enhanced beach erosion, and saltwater encroachment into coastal streams and aquifers.
These Earth motions are caused by ongoing adjustments of Earth's crust to the removal of the former ice sheets, tectonic deformation, subsidence of river deltas under sediment loads, and extraction of underground water, oil, or natural gas near the coast.

A sea wall made entirely of stone or a vertical sea wall with stone placed in front of it is probably the best and most durable form of shoreline protection you can buy.
As far as the structure itself is concerned some settling of a stone wall may occur over time, however the only maintenance that should ever be needed would be to add a layer of stone.

New sea wall may fall short as water rises, report says
It suggests that a new sea wall might have to be built higher to accommodate rising sea levels and coastal flooding caused by climate change.
A city consultant said the design of the replacement for the 1.9-mile wall "should accommodate a 0.9-foot rise in sea level over a 75-year period," while the UW group estimated the rise would be 1 foot to 2.8 feet.
Officials have said the sea wall, some of which was built in the 1930s, has deteriorated with age and been weakened by damage from marine organisms.

Stone along Hull sea wall a bad idea - The Boston Globe
In quick summary, after a December storm, the DCR determined that several hundred yards of the sea wall is in danger of collapsing due to many years of erosion (and the DCR's neglect and mismanagement).
Are we to believe that this sea wall will cause such a public menace that they have to immediately spend $2 million and dump tons of stone along the beach, essentially closing the beach for a temporary fix?
I propose the DCR seriously reconsider their misguided decision and go back to the people of the South Shore for their thoughts before ecologic and economic disaster strikes the communities that rely on Nantasket Beach.

The sea came right up to the bottom of the cliffs at this time, and the town commissioners built a similar wall for some distance along the same cliff in 1809.
The western cliffs in front of the Old Town were first protected by a wall in 1811 when a flint and limestone structure was built between Black Lion Street and Ship Street.
This was extended to West Street when the King's Road was constructed in 1821-2, and to East Street in 1825-7; by 1829 the build-up of shingle by the groynes enabled the construction of the Grand Junction Road and the extension of the sea-wall to meet the Chain Pier promenade.

BatesNow | Feb. 15, 2002 | Puppets join actors in Bates production of Duras' 'Sea Wall'
Seeling, who calls "The Sea Wall" one of her favorite novels, says that this drama set in colonial Indochina is "full of metaphorical images that translate well to puppetry."
It tells the story of a widow's stubborn fight against poverty and the fading attachments of her children — a fight symbolized by the sea wall erected in vain to keep seawater out of the family's rice paddies.
Seeling explains that Duras herself wrote a version of "The Sea Wall" for the stage, titled "The Eden Cinema." "It was an honor," the director says, to obtain the rights from the Duras estate to adapt the novel.
