SeaMonkey 1.0 Beta was released on December 19, 2005.
The choice of "SeaMonkey" as the official name of the follow-up project has drawn criticism from some long-time users and testers of the Mozilla Suite, as many would have preferred the continued use of the name "Mozilla" or "Mozilla Suite".

NewsForge | SeaMonkey Project picks up where halted Mozilla Suite left off
Although SeaMonkey version 1.0 will not deviate much from the last Mozilla supported version of the suite, the development team behind the project is looking to add many of the features currently available in Firefox and Thunderbird -- as well as some that are not.
His apprehension to just switching to SeaMonkey at the time of the post, he wrote, was that it was still in beta testing, and he is not willing to trust his data with the beta version.
He also wrote that switching to SeaMonkey, even if it means getting back the integration of a suite of applications, wouldn't be worth it if Firefox plugins don't work with the suite and its users can't maintain a similar level of functionality to the standalone browser.

In 2003 we announced our intention to shift development focus from the integrated Mozilla Application Suite (commonly referred to as "Seamonkey") to a new generation of applications -- the Mozilla Firefox browser and the Mozilla Thunderbird mail and news client.
We noted that a number of commercial distributors ship Seamonkey and will need the means to maintain it for their customers.
The ongoing alpha and beta releases of Seamonkey 1.8 have suggested that the Mozilla Foundation itself will be creating a 1.8 final release.

Mozilla Suite born-again despite Firefox Foundation
Despite it's current ugly logo -due to the lack of an official one-, I've been using SeaMonkey 1.0 Alpha (based on the Gecko 1.8 engine, to be used in the upcoming Firefox release) daily since its release and I'm very happy with what I see.
A rather primitive version of this feature was available in the closed source Netscape Communicator 4.x product released about 9 years ago, but for some strange reason was never implemented when the company decided to open the browser code in 1998 and later rewrite it almost from scratch, to create Mozilla.
The SeaMonkey alpha picked up my old Mozilla profile and all its configuration settings, and for me, it has been working fine so far, even with third party mozilla add-ons like Amazon.com's A9 search toolbar and the Googlebar.

Over at the Mozilla developer wiki, a new SeaMonkey home page has become the basis of the campaign to ensure the suite has a future.
As the article notes, the Mozilla Development Roadmap has stated that development on the Mozilla Application Suite would eventually cease since early 2003, though plans to retire the suite were put on hold in January last year.
There are currently active discussions in the #seamonkey channel of irc.mozilla.org and the most recent development is a draft letter to staff@mozilla.org from a group who wish to maintain the suite.

If the Foundation is willing to grant us the right to use the SeaMonkey trademark for this purpose, we propose to call these releases "SeaMonkey Suite" and keep the current version numbering.
We feel that combining this with a clear statement that these builds are not endorsed by the Mozilla Foundation should sufficiently allay the Foundation's concern (B), while allowing the Mozilla Foundation to have a future Mozilla Suite release if desired, using the then-current Gecko version number.
This leaves the issue of whether these releases can be hosted on ftp.mozilla.org (in a seamonkey/ directory, not the mozilla/ directory) without giving the impression that the Foundation endorses them.
