Carolina Morning News on the Web | Local News - The little railroad that could... 05/22/00
Williams' dream was to build a railroad from Richmond to Jacksonville, Fla., to Tampa Bay, Fla. It was a dream in direct competition with the already existing Atlantic Coast Line, which had a railroad along the same route.
Traffic was shuttled to the old Atlantic line; the Air Line was reduced to acting as a backup for its partner.
Deciding it would be cheaper to build a line connecting the old Air Line with the old Atlantic Line than it would be to fix the bridge, the company closed the bridge for good.

 Historical Sketches
Seaboard had over expanded during the roaring twenties, incurring considerable debt in order to do so, and as a result the company was forced into receivership during the great depression of the nineteen thirties.
Over the years, the line was improved and the Chattahoochee River bridge was strengthened so that freight trains were eventually authorized a maximum speed of 45 mph and the railroad’s standard diesel locomotives were able to operate across the River into Montgomery.
The former Seaboard line into Montgomery was soon abandoned in favor of the alternate ACL route between Savannah and Montgomery.

Seaboard’s lease of the Georgia, Carolina and Northern Railway in 1889 gave it a connection to Atlanta.
SAL absorbed the Macon, Dublin and Savannah Railroad (Macon to Vidalia) in 1958.

Seaboard was a powerful railroad with southern roots but when they built the railroad through the area known as Backbone Mountain west of Wattsville, they utilized a rail construction method known as “follow the contour” rather than merge the track with the terrain.
When the merger between Seaboard and Atlantic Cost Line occurred July 1, 1967, this section of track was labeled as difficult to maintain daily operations by the home office in Jacksonville because of permanent low train speeds and multiple rockslides that dumped large rocks onto the tracks after heavy rains.
Seaboard was forced to abandon the Coal City to Pell City branch line when railcar transfer negotiations with Southern Railway stalled at the Pell City interlock.

Seaboard Air Line Railroad bridge crosses North Tryon Street, which was lowered to form an underpass that runs below the rail line.
As opposed to the nearby West Sixth Street Railroad Underpass which utilizes massive concrete beam construction, the Seaboard bridge relies on a single thick reinforced slab.
The slab is supported by a series of posts on each side of the street that form a galleries that contain the sidewalks that run along the east and the west sides of Tryon street.

Seaboard Air Line Railroad Co. v. California Chemical Co.
"In cases of mistake as to the true line between adjoining lands, the real test as to whether or not a title will be acquired by a holding for the period of seven years is the intention of the party holding beyond the true line.
The intent to claim title up to the line is an indispensable element of adverse holding; the claim of right must be as broad as the possession.
We find the Florida rule to be that adverse possession is established by the occupant's taking possession with the belief that the land is his up to the mistaken line and so holding under a claim of title to that line.

Seaboard’s predecessor in Montgomery dated back to 1884 when the Americus, Preston and Lumpkin RR Co. was chartered to build a narrow gauge line from Americus to Lumpkin, Ga. A 37-mile line was completed between those two points in March 1886.
The line was sold at public auction in 1895 and a new company was formed, the Georgia and Alabama Ry.

The Seaboard Air Line Railroad (AAR reporting mark SAL) was an American railroad that existed between the 1880s and July 1, 1967, when it merged with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, its longtime rival, to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad.
The earliest portion of the SAL system was built as the Portsmouth and Weldon Railroad, which began operating in 1835 in southeastern Virginia and a small section of northeastern North Carolina, linking the Roanoke River to the harbor at Hampton Roads.
It was later known as the Portsmouth and Roanoke Railroad, and then the Seaboard and Roanoke Railroad.
