Seaboard System Railroad was created in 1982 when CSX Corporation merged its subsidiaries Seaboard Coast Line and Louisville and Nashville.
In 1985, Seaboard System in Georgia consisted of the former lines of Seaboard Coast Line, LandN, Georgia Railroad, Atlanta and West Point Railroad, and Gainesville Midland Railroad.
Macon-Milledgeville (part of former Georgia Railroad) abandoned 1985.

The Georgia Railroad was chartered Dec. 21 and construction commenced at Augusta in 1835, pushing westward toward the Chattahoochee Valley in western Georgia.
The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad was reorganized between 1873 and 1878 during receivership and was renamed the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (CandO) of July 1, 1878.
Chessie System Inc. was formed Feb. 26, and Chessie System Railroads was adopted as the new corporate identity for the CandO, BandO and WM railroads.

CSX Transportation was formed on July 1, 1986 as a renaming of the Seaboard System Railroad, which had absorbed the former Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, Louisville and Nashville Railroad and Seaboard Air Line Railroad, as well as several smaller subsidiaries.
The merger had been started in 1980 with the merger of Chessie System and Seaboard Coast Line Industries to form the CSX Corporation.
C can stand for Chessie, S for Seaboard, and X, the multiplication symbol, means that together we are so much more, and T for Transportation." The T had to be added to use CSXT as a reporting mark, since company initials that end in X could only be used by non-railroad railcar owners.

The Louisville and Nashville Railroad was operating the original Alabama and Florida Railroad and subsequent Pensacola Railroad route into Pensacola from Flomaton, Alabama, forty-four miles to the North.
The Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad received financial backing from the Louisville and Nashville Railroad during construction and ceased operating as an independant line on July 1, 1885 when it was incorporated into the Louisville and Nashville system.
In 1985, the Seaboard system and the Chessie system merged to form CSXT rail system.
