Bay Journal: Scientists diving into secrets of elusive seaducks - January/February 2004   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Although seaducks spend their winters anywhere along a 2,000-mile range from Labrador to Florida, it’s estimated that between a quarter and a third of the entire Atlantic Flyway population is concentrated in the Bay.
The Chesapeake has eight seaduck species, but researchers are focusing on the four which are least studied: the fl scoter, surf scoter, white-winged scoter and the long-tailed duck (formerly known as the oldsquaw).
After examining hundreds of gizzards and gullets from seaducks obtained from hunters in the past few years, Patuxent researchers have already learned that the birds are eating, for the most part, hooked mussels, although they consume large numbers of dwarf clams, gem clams, and a variety of other bottom dwellers.

 Seabirds and Seaduck
Seabirds and seaduck comprise those species of bird that depend wholly or mainly on the marine environment for their survival.
Seaduck include those species of duck (the family Anatidae) that largely feed in and breed adjacent to the sea, especially in the non-breeding seasons.
For example, direct competition for prey might occur between seabirds and seaduck and the fishing and shellfish industries, seaduck habitat might be rendered unavailable to birds by windfarm developments, and oil pollution incidents have been known to kill many thousands of seabirds and seaduck.

 Seaduck Food Availability
Additionally, telemetry data indicates that as winter progresses, seaducks are forced to move into deeper water in search of preferred food items (Figure 1.).
The species, number, and position of all seaducks observed are recorded by a pair of primary observers positioned at the bow of the boat.
Preliminary results have shown that concentrations of seaducks are associated with areas with hard substrate, with hooked mussel (Ischadium recurvum) as the dominant benthic species.

It was felt that the population decline issue is complex and probably the result of a wide range of environmental factors that may differ in their importance from one region to another.
Using a weight-of-evidence approach, it is apparent that populations of seaducks have declined in the past 30 to 40 years.
Seaducks, in general, are exposed to relatively high concentrations of certain contaminants, including cadmium, butyltins and PAHs.

 Surf Scoters
Nearly all North American seaduck species are exhibiting continental population declines and there is a fear that this trend could be indicative of widespread environmental degradation (Goudie et al.
The ecological causes for declining seaduck population trends is poorly understood; though habitat destruction, pollution, excessive hunting, and climate change may all play important roles.
Members of the seaduck clade share several life-history and ecological characters, including diving habit and primary reliance on animal prey, moderately heavy wing-loading and rapid flight, age of sexual maturity of two or more years, and predominately diurnal activity patterns (Livezey 1995).

Another aspect of the study will deal with the food habits of seaducks and the habitat being used by wintering ducks in Chesapeake Bay.

Changes in the location of seaduck populations have also been observed and have given managers new concerns.
Anthropogenic factors that could effect the distribution and food habits of seaduck populations include direct and indirect causes, such as excessive development of coastal areas, increased year-round boat traffic, and increased levels of contamination.
The USGS, in cooperation with the USFWS, is conducting the Atlantic Seaduck project to provide a better understanding of the changes in the distribution and abundance of these ducks, which will help in the conservation of these species.

EUROPA - Environment - Action plan Polysticta stelleri   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The Ornis Committee, BirdLife International, RSPB and Wetlands International Seaduck Specialist Group are responsible for initiating an emergency review if sudden major environmental changes occur within the species range, liable to affect the population or incidents which have an impact on a large proportion of the numbers at the known major wintering areas.
Northerly wintering seaducks like Steller’s Eider are dependant on open water for feeding, hence their distribution in late autumn and winter is influenced by the extent of the sea ice in staging and winter areas.
However, the risk that Steller’s Eider become extinct within the five year scope of the present action plan is very small, but in the longer term the extinction risk is real unless actions are taken to reverse the negative trend in numbers.
