The Seagram Company Ltd. was a large corporation headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada that was the largest distiller of alcoholic beverages in the world.
Joseph E. Seagram became a partner in 1869 and sole owner in 1883, and the company became known as Joseph E. Seagram and Sons.
The original Seagram distillery in Waterloo existed for several years as the Seagram Museum before being forced to close in 1997 for lack of funds.

Seagram Company Limited is a producer of distilled spirits and wines with head offices in Montréal.
The company was incorporated in 1928 as Distillers Corporation-Seagrams Ltd, as a holding company to acquire the capital stocks of Distillers Corp Ltd and Joseph E. Seagram & Sons Ltd, and adopted its present name in 1975.
The company has continued to expand in the liquor business and in other areas, although in 1980 it sold its oil, gas and related properties in the US to Sun Co, Inc. In 1995 it sold its 24% interest in E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Co, the largest chemical company in North America.

The archival materials donated by The Seagram Museum were acquired from a number of sources, through purchase and donations from individuals and from other offices of The Seagram Company, particularly from offices within Seagram's Waterloo plant.
The archives collections of The Seagram Museum were initially established in 1970 at LaSalle, Quebec and until 1982 functioned as the Seagram Information Centre, whose mandate was to acquire, arrange and make available to company employees all historical and contemporary records pertaining to the beverage alcohol industry and The Seagram Company in particular.
The first of these is records of The Seagram Company's Waterloo plant, from its beginnings in 1857 as Granite Mills to its purchase in 1928 by Distiller's Corp. Ltd., owned by Samuel and Harry Bronfman.

In 1883 Seagram bought out Roos and became the sole proprietor, using the names "Joseph Seagram Flour Mill and Distillery Company" and "Joseph E. Seagram, Miller, Distiller".
Seagram incorporated the company in 1911, changing the name to "Joseph E. Seagram and Sons, Limited." By 1919 when Seagram died, he had built his Waterloo distillery into a major exporting company and his brand names were widely known.
