Seal (SS-183) was laid down on 25 May 1936 by the Electric Boat Company, Groton, Conn., Iaunched on 25 April 1937, sponsored by Mrs.
Despite 11 sightings, she was plagued by uncertain torpedo performance against shallow draft vessels, by premature explosions and by leaky exhaust valves and holes in the fuel compensating line which resulted in air and oil leaks to the surf ace.
Seal was awarded 10 battle stars for her World War II service.

After refit was accomplished in Midway, on 24 June 1943 Seal departed on her seventh patrol for the area north east of the home Japanese island of Honshu, Lieutenant Commander H.B. Dodge commanding.
Seal was a pre-war design that had been in constant combat for over two years.
Seal was made ready for sea again and on 10 October, 1944, departed Midway for her final foray into Empire waters.

Hurd brought Seal to a normal approach course, and an hour later a convoy of four cargo vessels escorted by three destroyers was sighted.
Less than a minute after firing, as the crew tried frantically to get their boat to a safe depth, the surface ship skirted across the submarine's conning tower, bending her raised scope horizontal, and damaging the shears to the extent that the other scope was rendered inoperable.

 SUBMARINE ENGINES
A 45 horsepower gasoline engine powered Holland (SS1) on the surface and was used to charge her batteries.
The early 8 cylinder 38A8 was superseded by a 1,365 BHP 8 cylinder 38D-8-1/8 and then by a 9 cylinder, 1,535 BHP 38D-8-1/8; wartime submarines (from SS 381 on) used a 10 cylinder, 1,600 BHP 38D-8-1/8.
This source of confusion was ultimately eliminated when the class numbering system was abolished in 1939 and the SS hull numbers were painted on the conning tower fairwater for peacetime identification.

Length 114 ft. Captain Olsen Whilst under tow to SS Helen Nicol, was swept on to the remains of the Adolphe at Nobbies, port of Newcastle, where she broke up quickly, 30 August 1905.
Length 130 ft. Sank after a collision with SS Waratah at the entrance to Newcastle harbour, 30 July 1876.

 USS CAVALLA SS-244 Reunions - Cavalla Submarine reunions in Galveston Texas
Ron gave the audience a vivid description of the life, work, and sacrifice involved for submariners during the war.
The walls were bedecked with photos of Cavalla and her crews, the tables had sailor caps and assorted Cavalla pictures, plus a unique SS or SSK centerpiece.

Upon completion of the course, Carter was assigned to USS Pomfret (SS 391) based at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where he reported on board on 29 December.

A serious design flaw with the main induction hatch accounted for the death of 23 crewmen aboard the USS Squalus.
The main induction hatch's function was to seal the large air intake valve to the diesel engines when the boat submerged.
