Indeed, the fur seals may be just one example of a more general shift of pinniped species—a group including seals and sea lions—from the Pacific Coast mainland to offshore island refuges.
For instance, according to data gathered from living seal populations by UCSC graduate student Rob Burton, the bones of seals feeding close to shore are laced with more “heavy” carbon and nitrogen than the bones of those foraging in deeper waters.
Successful male seals are quite the playboys, forming harems of up to 40 females, while the other males just hang out on the sidelines and may not mate at all.

As of 1991, the northern elephant seal population was estimated at approximately 130,000 animals.
Juveniles of both sexes and adult female elephant seals come ashore again to molt their hair and skin in late April and early May. Large males and a few juveniles come ashore for their annual molt in mid-summer, while yearling and some juvenile elephant seals are on land in autumn.
The North Pacific harbor seal population is estimated at 320,000 animals and is centered in Alaska.

California sea lions are continuing an increasing trend; the population growth data based on pup counts has not shown a reduced rate of increase which would indicate that the MNPL has been exceeded.
In the commercial fisheries, California sea lions and Pacific harbor seals remove catch and damage gear in the salmon troll and gillnet fisheries; nearshore gillnet fisheries; herring, squid, and bait purse seine and round-haul fisheries; and trap and live bait fisheries.

BEHAVIOR: California sea lions are very social animals, and groups often rest closely packed together at favored haul-out sites on land, or float together on the ocean's surface in "rafts." They are sometimes seen porpoising, or jumping out of the water, presumably to speed up their swimming.
California sea lions are opportunistic eaters, feeding on squid, octopus, herring, rockfish, mackerel, and small sharks.

 Deadly Sea Toxin Kills California Dolphins, Seals
The animals are being poisoned by domoic acid, a nerve toxin produced by a certain species of microscopic algae, the California Department of Fish and Game said.
The exact cause is a mystery, but scientists speculate that the algae may be thriving on nutrients from agricultural runoff or sewage, said Chamois Anderson, a spokeswoman for the department.
Last year, according to the California wildlife agency, more than 1,000 marine mammals were found stranded or dead on state beaches.
