Maine - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Maine has since become a left-leaning swing state, but has voted Democratic in four straight elections, casting its votes for Bill Clinton twice, Al Gore in 2000, and John Kerry by a surprisingly wide margain in 2004.
Maine is the northernmost state in the New England region and the easternmost state in the country (the easternmost city in the United States is Eastport, Maine), bordered on the west by New Hampshire.
Maine is the most sparsely populated state east of the Mississippi River, owing in part to its huge relative size—its land mass exceeds that of all other New England states combined.

Maine State Symbols - Maine State Seal - The United States of America
Since that time, there have been variations in the details of the seal, but the overall design and images remain true to the spirit of that legislative session.
The center of the seal is a shield adorned with a tranquil scene of a moose resting in a field bordered by water and woods, with a pine tree standing tall directly behind the moose.
The legislature of 1919 decided that the design of the seal should no longer vary, and froze the design, and it is still used today.

MAINE SYMBOLS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Maine has the dubious distinction of being a State where NONE of the symbols as adopted by law are being used in common practice.
Few people know that Maine's first official flag was quite different than the one we see in use today (which is not legally correct according to the act of the Legislature that adopted it).
Maine has a "Uniform Flag Law" that regulates the display of US and Maine Flags and their usage in merchandising, desecration and mutilation.

Whoever it was could see artistry in industry and was able to convey in pictured symbols the motivating idea that hoisted the community into cityhood and made it the second largest municipality in Maine.
Alongside the base of the tower to the left, in symmetrical design as befits an official seal, are the great falls of the Androscoggin.
Most significant of all, in the background of that scene on the central shield of the seal is the railroad trestle that still crosses the river above the falls, and on it a wood-burning locomotive with its broad smokestack just pulling a train into Lewiston.

Although it wasn't as close as I would have liked it to be, I knew that this is the only way I could get close to Atlantic Puffins and Razorbills.
I had made reservations over the phone with Capt. John E. Norton and was scheduled to depart for Machias Seal Island on the morning of July 6th.
Unfortunately, since we were the first group to go into the blinds, we did not get a chance to stay at the Island any longer so I did not get a chance to take many photos of Arctic Tern.
