A young harbor seal, curious about the small audience he's attracted at the end of Pokanoket Trail in Touisset, inches right to the edge of an ice sheet in the Kickemuit River where he and another seal sun-bathed last week.
The other seal common to Rhode Island waters is the gray seal, which is noticeably larger, and has a head commonly referred to as a "horse-head." In recent years, the DEM has responded to harp and hooded seal strandings in Rhode Island waters, which is fairly far south for these species.
It is common for seals to haul-out to rest and sun themselves on rocks or beaches, and no response is needed for the first 24- hours, unless the animal is injured.
