  Inspirational HUMOR -- The Seamstress.
The seamstress replied that her thimble had fallen into the water and that she needed it to help her husband in making a living for their family.
The seamstress replied, "Yes." The Lord was pleased with the woman's honesty and gave her all three thimbles to keep, and the seamstress went home happy.
Some years later, the seamstress was walking with her husband along the riverbank, and her husband fell into the river and disappeared under the water.

"Slaves of the Needle:" The Seamstress in the 1840s
In most stories, the seamstresses' only choice was to succumb to vice (prostitution), or to retain her "virtue" and die.
The problem involved (depending on who was asked): a lack of communication between the rich and the poor (Disraeli's "two nations"), unemployment among men while women were working in increasing numbers, and the related breakdown of the working-class family, the New Poor Law of 1834, and not enough decently paid work for women.
The impoverished seamstress became, for early feminists, a symbol of the consequences of a hypocritical society that circumscribed women's lives, preached that they should not work (and consequently made almost no occupations open to them), while forcing them, at the same time, to work.

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress is a harshly realistic novel, in which the two main characters are forced to work in a coal mine and to carry buckets of excrement up and down a mountain, but it also has a fairy-tale quality.
And yet, at the end, when the Little Seamstress sets off for the city, she tells Luo that “she had learnt one thing from Balzac: that a woman’s beauty is a treasure beyond price” [p.

But not to worry; despite her good nature, this seamstress is much too smart to be taken advantage of by such a clumsy king.
In a clever twist on the denouement, when a greedy king reneges on his promise to the heroine, Osborne sends an admiring knight to warn the seamstress, who then delivers the king's comeuppance and wins both his kingdom and the hand of the knight (she proposes, naturally).

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress - Dai Sijie
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress describes the lives of the narrator and his close friend Luo during those years, as they are sent to a remote region for re-education by the peasants in 1971, when they are in their late teens.
Neither is even a high school graduate yet, but as the sons of doctors they are suspicious -- obviously tainted by their bourgeois intellectual backgrounds -- and so, like millions of others of Chinese of the time, forced to participate in this disastrous social experiment.
Four-Eyes, whose books they are, is unwilling to share his treasure, but after Luo and the narrator's appetite has been whetted by a sampling of Balzac they will do almost anything to get their hands on the suitcase containing these works.

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, by Dai Sijie, published by Alfred A Knopf, reviews and opinions by bookclubs.
Their delight in stealing and reading these books, and their attempts to woo (and re-educate) the little Seamstress make up most of this simple little book.
They made people think and this is highlighted by the actions at the end of the Little Seamstress herself.
The story does appear to be a little too light-hearted at first glance, but with a small amount of insight it can be noted that there are some key points and ideas brought up in regard to re-education of the mind, body and soul.

Dai Sijie adapted his own novel, Balzac and the little Chinese Seamstress, with the assistance of his usual screenwriter Nadine Perront.
By trying to avoid the traps of a literary adaptation—one will notice the great parsimony of voice-overs—and consequently cutting out a lot of elements of the story, Dai Sijie finally lost the heart of his story, making this film a simple small romantic comedy.
