  Sean Scully
By juxtaposing Scully's painting vis-a-vis photography and other works on paper, the exhibition shows how certain motifs of concrete, visible reality— such as walls, windows, and doors Ð are transported from photographs to paintings, as well as how certain colors and hues are transported from paintings to photographs.
Scully's work derived from the traditions of European early modernism (Mondrian and Matisse), in its ideals for harmony and spirituality, and American late modernism (Pollock and Rothko), in its urge for large, open-ended compositions, expressing personal inner states.
Sean Scully was born in Dublin in 1945.

Scully's nomadic wanderings in search of the façades and surfaces, the colors and shapes that speak to him of human hands and the passage of time have taken him to the Dominican Republic, England, Ireland, the Scottish Isles, Germany, Mexico, Morocco, Spain, and the United States.
The photographs that Scully made, once he had found what he was looking for as a painter in the eighties, were of kindred structures in what the philosopher Husserl designated the Lebenswelt - the world of the everyday and the commonplace, where experience begins and against which it must be checked.

Sean Scully   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Born in Dublin in 1945, Scully was inspired by paintings he saw in a local church and decided at a young age to become a painter.
Scully’s work is deeply concerned with colour, light and beauty, and looks to engage its viewer in a reflection on the meaning of presence and being.
The paintings are intended to remind the viewer of, in the artist’s terms, ‘the brutality of reality’ and of the ‘fact that we are physical…my paintings begin with that premise’.

Powerfully physical, Scully’s works have special and personal significance for the artist, as he uses a limited range of formal devices such as stripes and blocks to convey his responses to his environment.
Scully combines horizontal and vertical stripes; fl and white horizontal bands are juxtaposed with brick-red vertical stripes, calling attention to the tensions between them and their interplay, but achieving a very precise balance within the work.

 Exposition Sean Scully
Sean Scully tries to give to abstraction the kinds of association and nuances that have previously only been found in figurative art.
Sean Scully has a "craftsman" side ; he reminds me of a "Compagnon du Tour de France" : he uses traditional techniques (this is so rare...), gives pre-eminence to a strict form, and only after that does he let his fantasy delicately express itself inside the limits he has carefully set up.
Thus Sean Scully seems to come close to the masters of still life (especially from 17th and 18th centuries) when it was important to symbolize through some details (faded flowers, etc...) the inescapable wear given by Time and the great cyclic movement of the World.
