Séance on a Wet Afternoon is a perfect example of a film that merits a commentary track, either by director Bryan Forbes, actor and producer Richard Attenborough, or a noted film scholar.
Having undeservedly sunk into relative obscurity since its release almost forty years ago, Séance on a Wet Afternoon is one of those lost films that perfectly fits the bill for a DVD renaissance.
Séance on a Wet Afternoon is now available on DVD from Home Vision Entertainment in a new digital transfer (1.66:1) that has been enhanced for 16x9 televisions.

Seance begs to be compared to Sunset Boulevard although it is clearly the lesser of the two films.
The kidnapping and ultimate murder of the business man's 10 year old daughter is predicated on the desire for an ultimate seance as much as it is for 'Arthur's' benefit.
The confession occurring during a seance is an interesting innovation on the stock murder mystery climax scene, however.

While "Lady" clunks along today as a leaden stage-bound adaptation and "Poppins" does not seem quite as charming as it did, "Seance on a Wet Afternoon" and the two brilliant performances at its center remain as riveting as they were 40 years ago.

Bryan Forbes' Seance on a Wet Afternoon (1964) is one of the most celebrated British thrillers from the '60s, and it remains a compelling film to this day.
Adapted by Forbes from the novel by Mark McShane and produced by star Richard Attenborough, it's a small picture that was shot on a limited budget, deriving a lot of its power from a remarkable cast.
Seance is her film, chronicling the mental instability and gradual breakdown of Myra Savage, and the actress handles the role with a light touch.

Séance on a Wet Afternoon is a superbly acted, smartly crafted and sumptuously photographed crime and character drama that unfortunately falls flat at the end with a contrived finale that frustrates.
Kim Stanley is wonderful in her Oscar nominated role as Myra Savage, a mentally frail but emotionally strong woman trying to make do as a psychic and a medium.

Kim Stanley earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of a woman on the edge -- reminiscent of Angela Lansbury's turn in The Manchurian Candidate -- but it's Richard Attenborough who steals the show as her husband, who goes along with the affair but is torn between pleasing his wife and doing the right thing.
Seance on a Wet Afternoon is a slow burn as Myra (Stanley) hatches her plan, maintaining a calm demeanor while her husband totally cracks up.
It is also unfortunately a bit too slow of a burn for my tastes, agonizing in the hour or so occupied after the sad couple have received their payoff.

Made by Beaver Films, a company created by Bryan Forbes and Richard Attenborough, Séance On A Wet Afternoon is probably the best movie these collaborators were responsible for.
A slightly macabre feeling is established when the viewer realises that the mundane suburban activates of the couple are in fact elements of the kidnap plot, whether it is absentmindedly cutting up newspapers to form the ransom note or preparing the room that will become their abductees’ prison.
Séance on a Wet Afternoon is an expertly crafted movie and with its theme of child abduction is still relevant to a contemporary audience.

The Rocking Horse Winner (1950): John Mills, Valerie Hobson, John Howard Davies - PopMatters Film Review
Bryan Forbes's Séance on a Wet Afternoon similarly combines a domestic setting with an element of the fantastic, in this case the belief in communication with the dead.
Séance on a Wet Afternoon amounts unfortunately to a tepid exercise in emotional manipulation and primitive plot mechanics.
While Séance on a Wet Afternoon won several prizes at film festivals and led to Kim Stanley's nomination for an Academy Award, it seems in retrospect to pale in comparison to other works of the period that more successfully complicate a domestic setting.

An intensely claustrophobic nail-biter to rival prime Hitchcock, 1964's Séance on a Wet Afternoon is a classic British thriller written and directed by Bryan Forbes.
Set largely in an imposing Gothic house in north London, the film stars Richard Attenborough as Bill Savage, a man struggling to maintain his marriage to his increasingly unbalanced wife, Myra, played in an Oscar-nominated performance by the little-known but brilliant Broadway actress Kim Stanley.
On the DVD: Séance on a Wet Afternoon is presented in an excellent 16:9 transfer, anamorphically enhanced for widescreen televisions, that effectively captures the brooding look of Gerry Tupin's BAFTA-nominated cinematography.

Kourei (aka Seance, aka Korei, aka Ko-Rei), directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, despite having clearly been commissioned as a made-for-TV movie and aired in Japan in 1999, is yet another triumph of masterful and artful film-making by one of the true masters and innovators of the New Wave horror genre.
Based on an early 1960's British novel and film, Seance on a Wet Afternoon (written by Mark McShane and starring Richard Attenborough!), but subtly rewritten to suit Kurosawa's purposes, the movie is not one to watch if you're just looking for a series of big jumps: Kurosawa's movies never work along those lines.
