In late December 2006 I had the opportunity to visit the Seattle Aquarium located on Pier 59 in downtown Seattle along Puget Sound.
To the right of the walkway on the way up to entrance to the Seattle Aquarium you are greeted by a large aquarium built in to the exterior wall that contains native fishes and invertebrates of Washington State waters.
The future is bright for the Seattle Aquarium with a new $41 million expansion project nearing completion in June of 2007, the "Window on Washington Waters" 120,000 gallon (456,000 liter) exhibit will be completed.

 Seattle Aquarium Opens New Sixgill Research Exhibit - Northwest Dive News
The Seattle Aquarium opened a new exhibit in December as part of their continuing study of sixgill sharks.
The research is part of an overall effort by the Seattle Aquarium, Point Defiance Aquarium, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the University of Washington.
By baiting the sharks and attracting them to the end of the Aquarium pier, researchers were able to tag and track the animals, as well as taking tissue samples for genetics research.

The Seattle Aquarium chartered the plane to deliver one of its otters to Newport, and then return with one of the resident male otters from the Oregon Coast Aquarium.
A precocious 4-year-old, Adaa, from the Oregon Coast Aquarium will be introduced to the breeding program at the Seattle Aquarium while Kodiak, a seasoned 15-year-old from Seattle, will jockey for dominance with three other resident male otters at the Oregon coast facility.
According to the Seattle Aquarium curator, who is also keeper of the "otter stud book" for North America, there are 41 sea otters in captivity in the United States and Canada - including 16 northern sea otters and 25 southern sea otters.

Although the Seattle Aquarium had precursor institutions, such as the Seattle Frozen Fish Aquarium as well as the Seattle Marine Aquarium operated by Ted Griffin in the 1960s, the inception of Seattle's first true municipal aquarium was the Forward Thrust bond proposal in 1968.
He wanted to see the aquarium managed by a non-profit organization, as was the trend with many similar institutions, and led the effort to found the Seattle Aquarium Society, SEAS, in 1981.
The aquarium believed the exhibit, which explored the health of Puget Sound, was the first in the nation to focus on the local environment.
