The Seattle Art Museum opened on June 23, 1933 in an Art Deco building in Volunteer Park, given to the city by Richard E. Fuller, president of the Art Institute of Seattle, and his mother, Margaret MacTavish Fuller.
The museum's main collection moved to its present location in December 1991, at which time the old building was renamed the Seattle Asian Art Museum.
Beginning in 2006, the Seattle Art Museum will be expanding its 1991 location to the new WaMu tower in a joint effort with Washington Mutual who owns it.

SAAM currently is displaying extensive exhibits of the Three Perfections — painting, poetry, and calligraphy — as well as sculpture, religious artifacts, and a video installation by Iranian-born photographer, filmmaker, and video artist Shirin Neshat.
Museum visitors are given the opportunity to see large-scale paintings that are rarely exhibited due to the fragility and unique display requirements of large scrolls.

After being closed last year for reroofing, SAAM reopened last weekend and moves to center stage for a year while the downtown Seattle Art Museum is closed for extensive remodeling.
Museum admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students with ID and ages 62 and older, free for ages 12 and younger and free for everyone the first Thursday and first Saturday of each month.
The museum is in Seattle's historic Volunteer Park.
