The Seattle Times: Local News: Gay-marriage fight in state high court
Attorneys for 19 lesbian and gay couples, their expectations high, made their case for state-sanctioned civil marriage before the Washington Supreme Court as the state, King County and a group of intervenors argued that the traditional look of marriage should not change.
The few couples who were able to squeeze into the courtroom listened with rapt attention as the justices pelted questions at the attorneys — questions that offered a glimpse at the scope and complexity of the issues they are grappling with.
They argued that by denying gays that right, DOMA violates the state constitution's privileges-and-immunities clause, which requires that any privileges granted by the state to one group of citizens must be offered to all.

SEATTLE -- Two national religious groups sued in King County, Wash. Superior Court on Thursday on behalf of a Seattle resident seeking to block Mayor Greg Nickels from recognizing the unions of gay city employees who marry in Portland and elsewhere.
Nickels doesn't have the authority to issue gay marriage licenses, as the mayors of San Francisco and New Paltz, N.Y., have done, because marriage licenses are handled by counties in Washington.
In a news release, the diocese called "for public officials to honor the normal processes of government and to reaffirm the long-cherished definition of marriage as the union between a man and a woman that has served throughout history as both a building block and mortar for church and society."

That he has been once wounded by an art critic, which forced him into a self-exile, only makes him that much more interesting to Lillian, who is determined at all costs to get her own way.
Of course, a huge price is paid by both the painter and his daughter, as Lillian's will is done, and the art world, driven by greed and a need for something new, devours the fragile ego of the painter and in time, destroys him.
I also liked the subplot of Mac and Jenny's friend, Charlie (Cecil Luellen), and how that friendship is damaged both by Lillian's ambition and Charlie's own nephew's unwitting self-destruction (which happens as an indirect result of her manipulations).
