The Seattle Times is the leading daily newspaper in Seattle, Washington, United States.
The Times is one of a few remaining major city dailies in the United States to be independently operated and owned by a local family (the Blethens).
The Times tried to cancel the JOA in 2003, citing a clause in the JOA that three consecutive years of profit losses were cause for cancelling the agreement.

It began as the Seattle Press-Times, a four-page newspaper founded in 1891 with a daily circulation of 3,500, which (A state in New England) Maine teacher and attorney Alden J. Blethen bought in 1896.
The Times attempted to get out of the JOA in 2003, resulting in a legal battle which the Times lost.
Editorially, the Times is probably more conservative than the liberal-leaning P-I, endorsing a mix of (A tributary of the Kansas River that flows from eastern Colorado eastward through Nebraska and Kansas) Republican and (Click link for more info and facts about Democratic) Democratic candidates and often leaning towards centrists and incumbents.

Hearst argued that the Times shouldn't be allowed to count losses caused by extraordinary events, such as the 49-day strike against both dailies in late 2000.
Under the agreement, the Times— owned by the Blethen family with a minority share held by Knight Ridder —; handles printing, distribution and advertising at both papers in exchange for 60% of their joint revenues.
The Times said it suffered financial losses under the agreement in three consecutive years — 2000, 2001 and 2002 — thus triggering an 18-month period during which the Times and the P-I could negotiate the P-I's closure.

The Times on Thursday notified the newspaper's owner, The Hearst Corp., that between 2002 and 2004 it suffered consecutive losses under the 1983 agreement in which The Times handles circulation, printing and advertising for both newspapers in exchange for 60 percent of their joint profits.
The Times, owned by the Blethen family and Knight Ridder Inc., says the agreement is no longer profitable, thereby triggering a clause in the agreement that would require owners of both papers to begin working toward closing one of them.
The Times, since April 2003, has been trying to dissolve the JOA and has sought to invoke a clause in the contract that allows either paper to end the agreement if it suffers three consecutive years of losses.

EATTLE, Oct. 7 — The Seattle Times asked a state appeals court on Tuesday to review a lower court's ruling that prevents the newspaper from dissolving its 20-year-old operating arrangement with The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Last month, Judge Greg Canova of King County Superior Court ruled that The Times could not use losses sustained in 2000, a strike year, to justify ending its joint operating agreement with The Post-Intelligencer, which is owned by the Hearst Corporation.
Frank Blethen, publisher of The Times, whose family controls 50.5 percent of the paper, said Judge Canova's ruling jeopardized the paper's survival.

The way I see it, because the citizens of Seattle have now voted five times to build the monorail, it is the job of the mayor, City Council and anybody else who works for the city of Seattle to make it happen.
She is currently a Port Commissioner here in Seattle and, while not yet a consistent supporter of monorail, has spoken publicly in favor of the Monorail Project and supports expansion of transit in our City.
