The R.J. Hackett premiered the style and the second Algosoo was the final vessel designed this way.
More recently built lakers, like the Seawaymax CSL Niagara, have a single large superstructure island right astern.
Since the freshwater lakes are less damaging then the salt water of the oceans, many of the Lakers remain in service for long periods and the fleet has a much higher average age than the ocean-going fleet.

In addition, although the DND exhibits a larger dollar value demand, the Coast Guard has an immediate need to replace up to eight medium-sized buoy tenders, and a sustained requirement to replace much of its fleet (including icebreakers) over the next 10-15 years.
The vessels of the Coast Guard fleet, except the CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent, are below SEAWAYMAX size, meaning that yards in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic Provinces could potentially fulfill virtually all such requirements, subject to competitive considerations.
If the dimensions of the vessel were to respect SEAWAYMAX limitations (226m length, 24m beam), then Port Weller Dry Docks could also be added to this list.
