Seaweed fertiliser   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Seaweed fertiliser is valuable addition to the organic garden, and is abundantly available for free for those living near the coast.
However, caution should be observed when collecting seaweed, particularly from areas that are liable to pollution, such as downriver (including estuaries) of industrial activities, or from coastal areas washed by tidal flows in the vicinity of nuclear power stations, as seaweed is susceptible to radioactive or other contamination.
Seaweed, particularly bladderwrack, kelp or laminaria, can be either applied to the soil as a mulch (although it will tend to break down very quickly) or can be added to the compost heap, where it is an excellent activator.

Another benefit of using seaweed fertiliser over time is it acidifies and adds iron to the soil, which is great news if you are growing acid and iron hungry plants like gardenias, camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons.

Fertilizer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fertilizers (British English fertilisers) are compounds given to plants to promote growth; they are usually applied either via the soil, for uptake by plant roots, or by foliar feeding, for uptake through leaves.
Fertilizers typically provide, in varying proportions, the three major plant nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium), the secondary plant nutrients (calcium, sulfur, magnesium), and sometimes trace elements (or micronutrients) with a role in plant nutrition: boron, chlorine, manganese, iron, zinc, copper and molybdenum.
Over-application of chemical fertilizers, or application of chemical fertilizers at a time when the ground is waterlogged or the crop is not able to use the chemicals, can lead to surface runoff (particularly phosphorus) or leaching into groundwater (particularly nitrates).

Thousands of tons of these seaweeds are harvested each year for use as fertilizer, animal feed, packing material for the lobster and marine baitworm industries, and the extraction of algin.
