Sebaceous cyst - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A sebaceous cyst (a form of trichilemmal cyst; also called: keratin cyst; sometimes wrongfully called: epidermal cyst or epidermoid cyst (see ICD-10 L72.0)) is a closed sac or cyst below the surface of the skin that fills with a fatty white, semi-solid material called sebum.
The scalp, ears, genitals, and face are common sites for sebaceous cysts, though they may occur anywhere on the body except the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
Surgical excision of a sebaceous cyst is a simple procedure to completely remove the sac and its contents.

Sebaceous gland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sebaceous glands can usually be found in hair-covered areas where they are connected to hair follicles, deposit sebum on the hairs, and bring it to the skin surface along the hair shaft.
Sebaceous glands are also found in non haired areas of lips, eyelids, penis, labia minora and nipples; here the sebum reaches the surface through ducts.
Sebaceous glands are involved in skin problems such as acne and keratosis pilaris.

Epidermoid and Pilar Cysts Sometimes Called Sebaceous Cysts - Patient UK
These cysts used to be called sebaceous cysts but this term is no longer correct as the origin of these cysts is not from the sebaceous glands in the skin (as was once thought).
An epidermoid cyst is a cyst where the cyst sac forms from cells that normally occur on the top layer of the skin (the epidermis).
A pilar cyst is a cyst where the cyst sac forms from cells similar to those that are in the bottom of hair follicles (where hairs grow from).

Sebaceous Cyst Excision with Minimal Surgery A blockage of sebaceous gland ducts, presumably from injury, infection or irritation, results in cyst formation.
The cysts are freely movable unless episodes of inflammation, infection or leakage have caused the development of a surrounding fibrous tissue reaction.

Sebaceous Cyst - Treatment to Remove Cysts
If a sebaceous cyst becomes infected, an antibiotic taken by mouth and minor surgery done in the office may be needed to relieve the pressure and discomfort.
Sebaceous cysts often recur after this type of surgery because the sac or wall is left behind.
To remove a sebaceous cyst completely, it has to be excised (cut out) in order to remove the sac or cyst wall.

Olympus Microscopy Resource Center: Specialized Microscopy Techniques - Phase Contrast Photomicrography Gallery - ...
A sebaceous cyst occurs when keratin-producing glands in the skin become clogged, causing the gland to enlarge.
The term "sebaceous" cyst is something of a misnomer because these cysts do not, in fact, occur in the sebaceous glands but in the skin's hair (keratin) producing follicles.
Sebaceous glands produce sebum, an oily substance of unknown function though it undoubtedly has significance since humans have more and larger sebum-producing sebaceous glands than most mammals.
