The county was formed on January 6, 1851 and named for William Sebastian, United States Senator from Arkansas.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 29.50% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who are 65 years of age or older.

 Brief History of Van Buren, AR
The county seat in 1835 was at Crawford Old Court House on Arbuckle Island.
In 1836 after Arkansas was admitted as a state, John Drennen and David Thompson realized that Van Buren, owned by Thomas Phillips was a better site for a town than Columbus because of the higher ground.
On condition that the C rawford County Court HOuse be permanently located in Van Buren as the county seat, John Drennen and David Thompson donated a public square in the center of the townin 1841-1842, it was the most imposing building in the couny.

His father was Oliver Brewer born in North Carolina in Hillsboro District, Chatham County, from where he moved to a point on the Missouri River near Boonville, and later to a point near Murfreesboro, in Pike County, Arkansas, where he died, on October 13, 1834.
At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 Judge Philip D. Brewer's father, John Oliver Brewer, was county surveyor of Sebastian County, Arkansas.
He was elected as a Democrat to the Lower House of the Arkansas State Legislature at an election held in the fall of 1890, serving during that session which extended from January 12th, to April 3, 1891.

 Col. John Griffith
John Griffith first enlisted in the 3rd Arkansas (Gratiot's) State Infantry, C.S.A. with the rank of Captain and commanded Company E in the battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri on August 10, 1861.
John Griffith became a Lieutenant Colonel in the 17th Arkansas (Rector's) Infantry on December 17, 1861 and was elected Colonel of the regiment on April 16, 1862.
Shortly after his younger brother, Ben Griffith, was killed by Freedman's Bureau agents in Clarksville, Red River County, Texas in July of 1868, Colonel John Griffith and the rest of his family left southwestern Arkansas for sanctuary in Texas.

It was created from that part of Crawford County, which lay south of the Arkansas River, the western part of Scott county, and a small portion of the northwestern part of Polk County.
Scott County gave all the territory north of the top of Black Jack Ridge and two ranges were taken from the west end across to Polk County.
On June 1, 1861, the southern boundary of the county was fixed on the top of the Poteau Mountains, and the territory taken from Scott and Polk counties was restored.

 Samuel "Moss" Griffith
According to information provided by Arkansas CSA expert Bryan R. Howerton, Samuel Arthur "Moss" Griffith initially enlisted as a Private in River’s Battery, 1st Arkansas Light Artillery at Fort Smith, Arkansas on October 5, 1861 (see URL at http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/1starty.html).
Both written and oral accounts describe how Mary Harlow Griffith pulled silken handkerchiefs through her brother’s badly infected shoulder wound in order to draw puss out; this inadequate treatment along with applications of poultices, was the best available in those days before antibiotics.
Corporal Samuel Griffith's son, Samuel Arthur "Bud" Griffith, moved to Taylor County, Texas with his three uncles in 1877, while his daughter, Barbara Ella Griffith, married a Confederate comrade of her uncles, Matthew McCrary, and stayed in Comanche County, Texas.
