From a genealogical perspective, the useful history of the Santa Barbara County area begins with the Presidio period, even though there is evidence that as many as 150 tribes occupied the area for the previous ten centuries.
The first major earthquake, recorded in Santa Barbara County in 1812 which tumbled the La Purisima Mission in Lompoc while services were being held, did little to slow growth.
The city of Santa Maria was laid out as Central City in 1875, but changed to Santa Maria in the early 1880's to conform to the name of the valley.

 Santa Maria in Vallicella -- the Chiesa Nuova
When the first primitive church of Santa Maria in Vallicella was built, the area was rather unhealthy, but it was strategically located not far from the Papal district and on the pilgrim route through the Eternal City.
The new building reflected the inclination of Philip Neri and, in fact, according to his wishes, the nave was painted stark white (gold stucco and ornamentation added in the 18th century), and all the altars of the chapels were dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Philip also successfully lobbied the Pope to house the ancient image of Santa Maria in Vallicella in the new church, and the painting was moved to the church even before the complex was completed.

All that was known of California prior to 1769 was based on the reports of six expeditions: Cabrillo in 1542-1543; Drake in 1579; Gali in 1584; Cermeño in 1595; Vizcaíno in 1602-1603; and Carreri in 1696.
Sebastian Rodriguez Cermeño, returning from the Philippines in 1595, was directed to explore more of the California coast, and so, like Gali, followed a more northern route.
Sebastian Vizcaíno left Mexico City on March 7, 1602, and arrived in Acapulco on the 19th.
