  Pourade: The Explorers
Vizcaino and the other passengers and crew were put ashore near San Jose del Cabo, well inside the tip of the peninsula, with provisions and wood for huts, and the Santa Ana was looted and set afire.
Vizcaino named Monterey Bay in honor of the viceroy and reported that it was a wonderful harbor of refuge, when actually it was only an open roadstead.
Vizcaino, however, bounced up as the viceroy's ambassador to Japan, with authority to look for the islands of gold and silver, which of course were never found, and to survey the Japanese coast for possible harbors of refuge for the Spanish galleons.

Spain needed a resting place for her Manila galleons sailing from the Philippines to Acapulco, and needed to strengthen its territorial claim before England or Russia could establish colonies in California.
For the next 167 years the inroads made by Cabrillo and Vizcaino remained unexplored while Spanish trade galleons, enroute from the Philippine Islands to the port of Acapulco, continued to travel in sight of the California coast.
Based on Vizcaino's maps and writings from over a century before, Monterey Bay was selected as the primary goal for the expedition, having been described as an excellent harbor, and well located along the California coast.
