A phenetic analysis of the species of Sechium and its allies in subtribe Sicyinae, using both palynological and macromorphological characters, was carried out.
The observed clustering within Sechium does not corres-pond to the two sections of the genus recognized by Jeffrey.
Sechiopsis appears to be the closest relative of Sechium.

 Chayote
The first botanical description mentioning the name Sechium was in fact done in 1756 by P. Brown who referred to plants grown in Jamaica.
During this same period, the chayote was introduced into Europe whence it was taken to Africa, Asia and Australia, while its introduction into the United States dates from the late nineteenth century.

Despite the importance of these genera, the systematic study of at least Sicana and Sechium had not been carried out, or at the most, as in Cyclanthera, only some details are already known.
The results showed homogeneous pollen for all the species recognised as Sechium, which confirmed the former assumptions, based on gross morphology, habitat, etc., that indicated a large number of species for the genus.
The very narrow distribution pattern of these species, the disturbance of their habitats, as well as the fact that only two of them thrive in protected areas, are strong arguments for considering all of these species as endangered.

Sechium edule (chayotte) is a vegetable very spent in the human nutrition as the popular medicine due its properties such as the diuretic and the hypotensor effects.
The aim of this work was to assess the oxidant or antioxidant action of the agents presents in the extract of Sechium edule verifying its effects on the labeling of blood elements with 99mTc and on the inhibition of the activity of acetyl cholinesterase (AchE).
