From 1949 to 1975 and from 1991 to 1993, as part of Strategic Air Command, and later Air Combat Command, it engaged in training for strategic warfare.

The VIII Bomber Command (later redesignated Eighth Air Force) activated as part of the U.S. Army Air Forces on 28 January 1942, at Hunter Field in Savannah, Georgia.

In total, the four Air Forces of Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom have flown over 9,600 hours of flying up to the beginning of July in operating the 84 aircraft delivered to the four Nations.
In December 2005, the Italian Air Force started operations with Eurofighter Typhoon while, in the UK, No 3 Squadron received its first aircraft on 31 March 2006, making it the first operational unit of the Royal Air Force.

The experience of the Allied forces in North Africa in 1942 and 1943 convinced the planners of "Overlord" that two tactical air forces -- one to support the British/Canadian ground forces, and one to support the US ground forces -- were essential to successfully invade Europe.
Because of their short range, fighter units and fighter-bomber units would have to move to quickly-prepared bases close to the front as soon as the Allied ground forces advanced.

 Atlas 5 gets go-ahead for second Air Force mission
The U.S. Air Force has authorized International Launch Services (ILS) to begin integrating the Wideband Gapfiller Satellite #3 (WGS-3) with the Atlas 5 rocket, as the second mission ordered from the company under the government's Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) program.
In February, the Air Forceauthorized ILS to begin integration of WGS-2, now set for launch inlate 2005.
Both WGS missions will launch from Cape Canaveral Air ForceStation, Fla. The Wideband Gapfiller Satellites program, like the EELVprogram, is managed by the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Centerat Los Angeles Air Force Base.
