It is managed by a group of Detroit social elite "club women," both white and African American, including Fannie Richards, Detroit's first African-American public school teacher, and Mary Ann Shadd Cary, a former abolitionist and a former publisher of the Provincial Freeman, an abolitionist newspaper.

This was Detroit's seventh major church (after Saint Anne Catholic, First Presbyterian, Central Methodist, Saint Paul Episcopal Cathedral, First Baptist, Saint Mary Catholic) and was the oldest among Blacks in the Midwest.
Second Baptist claimed a mission to free slaves and have them enjoy the full privileges of American citizenship.
The church kept pressure on until the end of the Civil War when the 13th-14th-15th Amendments were added to the Constitution declaring an end to slavery, making Blacks citizens, and allowing fl men to vote.

He was excluded from the Tarrant County Baptist Association in 1922 and from the Texas Baptist Convention in 1924.
Trials for perjury and arson in 1912 (related to a fire which destroyed the church auditorium) and murder in 1927 (Norris had killed a man in his office who threatened his life) ended with his acquittal on all charges.
