Corinth was founded in 1853 as Cross City, so-called because it served as a junction for the Mobile and Ohio and Memphis and Chalreston railroads.
It was the town's early newspaper editor, W.E. Gibson, who suggested the name of Corinth, named for the city in Greece that also served as a crossroads.
Corinth's location at the junction of two railroads made it strategically important to the Confederacy during the American Civil War.

In 1864, his regiment was in the Vicksburg campaign and took part in the many battles in that vicinity; he was at Champion Hills, Black River, and Jackson, Miss., and he aided in the building of the canal constructed by Gen. Grant around Vicksburg.
Hill was wounded at Corinth, he was left unattended for three days on the battlefield, ignored by the Confederate surgeons who said he would die anyhow.

Pollock suggests that Paul urged Sosthenes to remain as the synagogue leader after becoming a Christian and that the unbelieving Jews beat him in anger after the court battle, because Paul was not around.

As to be expected, early reports of the battle's results were misleading indicating a Northern victory; however, as later information was received a Southern victory was shown.
