General Robert E. Lee's rout of Union forces during the Battle of Second Bull Run, or Second Manassas as the North called it, dealt a serious blow to the troops of the Union army, their leaders, and their cause.
Beaver Dam creek, or swamp, as it is called locally, is a short stream running from the north into the Chickahominy; it is crossed by the main road from Mechanicsville down the north side of the Chickahominy, by way of Gaines' mill, to Old Cold Harbor.
The second assault, 22 May, was a disaster for Union forces, showed the strength of the miles of Confederate works arching east around the city, and convinced Grant that Pemberton could only be defeated in a protracted siege.
